I came home rom school today to ind one of my pullets laying in her box not moving. She looked at me but is having trouble holding her head up. She can stand sometimes but she hangs her head low. Im giving her water and yogurt at the moment. She gasps for air after she drinks Please I really need your help. Shes a leghorn pullets at about 7 1/2 months old. PLEASE I NEED HELP.

How awful. I saw someone else on here complain of that, too--and it turned out they had so many lice or mites that the poor bird got anemia and died. You might check for that?? Otherwise I dont know, but I hope she pulls through.

is she stooling, what does it look like? Can you see anything in her throat? has she laid recently? just some info that may help others answer some more....good luck with your girl, I hope she gets better ~ Kim
 
She had an egg next to her wehn I got hom. She had runny poo when I picked her up. She won't let me look down her throat. She doesn't have an impacted crop or anything. She was perfect yesterday. I just don't know what to do. Im sitting her balling my eyes out..
 
make sure she is isolated from your other birds, in a warm, quiet place. I am wondering if a round of antibiotics would help her? I am not sure, though. Keep her eating and drinking. And the isolation is for her safety and your other girls....I am so sorry, I know how it feels I love my birds so much ~ Kim
 
Good luck to you. I also have a sick hen. She was one of four that came to us 10 days ago from a farm and is ~6 months old. She started out very droopy and sleepy, and has since pretty much stopped eating and sleeps all the time. We separated her into a crate and noticed that she was infested with mites. We dusted her with pyrethrum & DE ~5 days ago, but she hasn't improved. I've been feeding her boiled oatmeal thinned with water and yogurt via eyedropper. She barely opens her eyes. I noticed that she still had live mites on her (crawling on her eyelids!) so I dusted her again with Sevin today.

I guess my advice would be that if yours has lice or mites, skip the DE and pyrethrum and to straight to the strong stuff (Ivermec, Sevin). I'm also using DE for the bedding and dusting areas, but I wish I would have started with the stronger insecticide right away instead of hoping that the more "natural" option would be effective (it wasn't).

Stop cryng. That won't help the chicken.

You need to be proactive in these matters. It could be any number of a 100+ things wrong with her.

Separate her from the flock. Preferably into a kennel or small crate. Put a heat lamp on her and keep her warm. Dim the lights - no bright white lights. Put 1 tbsp raw organic apple cider vinegar in 1 quart of water. Offer her 5 drops of no iron baby liquid vitamins - poly-vi-sol - by beak. Offer her some yogurt, cooked egg, meat scraps as treats.

Begin making notes of her behavior, her poops, egg laying or any since of other illness developing.

Has she been wormed? Does she have mites or lice?

That is all you can do at this time.

Until you have specific symptoms and an idea of disease you can't offer any other treatment.
 
I have on hand VetRx and some Penicillin V tablets but I don't think that tablets will do anything. I have her isolated and she's just sitting at the back of her crate sleeping. When she's sleeping her head moves back and forth. I just don't know what to do. I've called every vet I know of. I'll spend anything for my little girl.
 
Shr seems a little more perky when I come with something for her. She stands up sometimes but she nods her head frequently when she looks up. Her comb and wattles are healthy. She hasn't pooped yet. Is it ok to give VetRx to her when she has food?
