Here are the images of the candling device I came up with.

The first picture is of the parts, which all came from Home Depot.

90 watt spotlight bulb
ceramic base with ease screws underneath for the wire
lamp cord with inline switch
a 5" to 4" adaptor (in heating and cooling)
a 4" cap (in plumbing) (I cut the hole in it)

The second picture is of everything put together, it all just stacks.

The third picture is off an egg on the candler...the egg came from the fridge and is a brown barred rock egg. I'm not trying to hatch it =]

Let me add a quick warning...

A 90watt spotlight really shows what is in the egg, but....

never leave an egg on it for more than 10 seconds

never leave it on for more time than it takes to view the egg

If left on...that spotlight can create enough heat to melt the black plastic cap

a standard 60 watt bulb could be used instead and would be safer and cooler, but I elected to use the spotlight because you can see every detail in the brown eggs.

In my last hatch, we were able to see the whole chick moving around in there. It was amazing.

Cool.....materials are on my list for next trip to HD. You could add an an automatic toggle thumb swith spliced into the wire. You know one of those spring switch that automatically turn off when you let go....I think they are called deadmans switch??

That's great! Simple and not very many parts!

A few things I'd probably experiment with if I was building this:

Flourecent or LED spotlights: They can be really bright but don't put out much heat

or

Momentary on switch, so it is only on while you are pushing the button to ensure that the eggs don't cook and that the plastic doesn't melt.
