So I decided to build an underground coop: UPDATE pg 33

Quote:
With an under ground coop, it will be cooler in the summer months, and warmer in the winter. Basically the same thing as a bank barn, and you can't get anything better than them!... At least IMO

That's very neat! There is an under ground house right up the road from our farm... Always wondered what it was like inside... so you need to take pics inside when it's done! They have solar panels on the roof (not sod

) Awesome job!

Oblio - great coop!
Wanna see if it can be reproduced in Indiana?
Strictly in the interest of Science...
I am willing to "sacrifice" some of my acreage for the experiment (with your labor, of course

BTW: is that you eventing in your avatar?
Cool!
I used to event my TB - DH & I showed BNH/BNR and schooled to Training level at the home barn.
We cliniced with Ralph Hill many years ago.

Finally nearing completion. Still need to put more dirt on the roof, a deep layer of leaves on the floor, cover two of the openings with chicken wire, and build a door.

The nesting boxes and roost:

The chickens will even have a decent view out their door:

Very cool! Really nice job and so well protected.

I noticed that your roost seems to be lower/same level as your nesting boxes though. If your chickens decide to sleep in the nesting boxes instead of on the roost you may have to lower the box. Chickens tend to want to roost on the highest thing in the coop and it can make for messy nesting boxes when they are set higher then the roost.

ETA--I want that view for my house!

Watch your chickens closely when you put them in the coop, keep an eye out for burrows in your yard, it may look like a prarie dog colony eventually.......
