Nevadans?

Oops. I have a lot of chicklet sized holes and my indoor brooder is too small for the 2 Moms to join them!

Well, we have problems already. Remember the other pullet that wouldn't stay consistent? Well she is crowding into the nest with her hatch mate (drawn by the peeping I'm sure) and in the ruckus they stepped on one of the eggs and crushed it. Then they started pecking at the yolk which wasn't completely absorbed yet. I've been out there a lot so I saw this and immediately moved him to the hen that has been so diligent. She tucked him under her breast to keep him warm and he stopped his frantic cheeping as soon as she did but I don't have high hopes for him.

It looked as though there was another broken egg under them but I heard no cheeping so I didn't disturb them any further. Guess we'll just have to wait and see.

I agree. It's still tough to let 'em be.

I just went and checked on them and there is no activity in any of the other eggs yet. I'm behaving and resisting the urge to peek again. I did look under the gals but I didn't touch any of the eggs.

Congrats on the hatch Sunny! That is so cool to hatch them naturally.

Well, I got my hogs back from the processor today. Seems I misjudged the weight a little...

They were 350 lbs. live weight!

Well, the female was 5 lbs. less than the male. I had figured 240, but that's what they ended up as dressed!

They were just over 6 months old.

In case anyone is interested, this is what 478.5 lbs. of pork looks like in "freezer camp"!

OMG! Ron that is a ton o'meat you got there! Hopefully that will last you all winter. My freezer looks somewhat similar but it is full of whole briskets and chicken that was on sale at Smart & Final. $2/lb for Whole Brisket was just something I could not pass up. hehe

Ron - that is a beau-ti-ful sight!

Sunny - how are the pips? The peeping does attract the other birds - something I always forget

Just Friday I was sitting on the porch waiting for a nice lady from Fernley to pick up hatching eggs. I heard the unforgetable peeping of a new hatchling. As I stood up to look for it - the porch gang all jumped down and gathered around the fenced front yard. My adorable Dora (MF cochin) had hatched her first egg. Everyone croweded around the kennel trying to get a peek at the pip.

We lost power yesterday - was out from about 4 until 8:30 plus no phone service. I went to bed early.

We lost power last night off and on too. I ended up closing down the computer until around midnight just to be on the safe side. I love rain but it could have waited at least 3 more days until I got my coop semi-finished and the girls moved in to a dryer place. I built a survival hooch for them for now out of the remaining 2X4's and palettes I had.

My DH could not believe they were not huddled under it instead of running around the yard swimming in the mud puddles. My SLW's and White Leghorns are BLW and Black Leghorns now. *LOL*
