I have another wellie roo and he is very respectful. He is also the top roo of the three [I have two delaware roos] I have and they all seem to get along very well.

When would be a good time to have aproximate 15 chicks shipped to Michigan??

Funny I come here and find you all talking about roo temperaments tonight. This afternoon when I was out doing some chores one of my just-turned-9-week old cockerels was jumping on and trying to "mate" one of the full-grown muscovy hens.

Talk about too big for his britches. There's always one... in every group.

HH - That depends on what you're doing with them when they get here.

The later you wait the more you'll be able to get away with not using a heat lamp (or other heat source for them) during the brooding stage -- in the dead of summer when we get a good heat wave you can use none at all! Also, if you want them to be foraging from an early age, you'll want to make sure they're here when that's possible. Late spring is usually suitable for having young chicks out in limited time frames, for instance. My advice would be to consider how you want to manage them when they get here, dates when you want to have them at a certain age and then go from there to choose your ship date. Just to give you an example of what I mean. May 1 is pretty much when it's safe to say we can put big batches out on the paddocks. So I know I want chickens of age to be moved out on the paddocks on that date. So since I move them out of the brooder at six weeks I count backwards six weeks from May 1. I get March 20. Now, if I were having them shipped in, that would be my ship date. Since I'm hatching though I go ahead and count back another 3 weeks to get my set date. February 27. So I want to set eggs on February 27th in order to have 6 week old juveniles ready for turning out on May 1. Make sense? As far as shipping temps will there be just the 15 in the box or are you combo ordering with someone else? I've had chicks shipped in rather inclement weather in the past, but usually in batches no smaller than 50. I would expect anything 25 or more would be fine anytime after mid to late Feb. though.

Hmmm. In that case, do they offer a heat pack? Might be a good investment if you want them here in the early to mid spring. Just in case. Until mid to late may -- and sometimes later -- it's just hard to say with Michigan weather. It could be 50 next week and in the teens on May 10th. Wouldn't be unheard of. Hopefully someone with experience shipping smaller batches will chime in. Sorry I can't be more helpful.
