I have seen a hay bale hen house as long as you can keep the predators out. It will be temporary but should last through springs if the chicks don't pull out all the straw and play with it.
I heard that just laying it on the ground would be good enough, I guess it depends on what type of predator you might be dealing with. My ground is very hard and full of rock, so I am just laying a border of landscape timers all around the coop. I hope it works.
I read that chickens like a cozy, quiet, dark nest, so I put a top on it, that along with a lot of the commercial ones I have seen have a top on it, but, as long as the chicky is happy, I don't think they care.

I built this nexting box from some scrap I had laying around. The nests are 12"x12" by 14 tall. I put on a front roosting bar but did not know how far out it should be, does it look ok, or should it be changed? The outside edge is 8" away from the front of the nest. Any suggestions? Thanks...
