    Are there "special" chicks?

Out of the 13 chicks that have hatched over the past month, six of the older have gone back to their original coop, but four smaller and one of the larger ones are still here. I kept back the one older chick because she (wishful thinking) has had some sort of special attachment to me for a long...

Safe way to kill the rats who are eating my chicks

It's a long story, but my dead neighbor had a cat. We live on a dirt road, on a hill in the foothills of the Sierras, so he was sort of all of ours. My neighbor had a friend, who works at a low cost spay and neuter place and I suspect now that she is also a PETA person, not that I'm against...

Safe way to kill the rats who are eating my chicks

I found a chick, who is inside a 4-story wire cage with 5 others, with his insides...out and pretty hollow inside. I checked around the cage and under on corner, it looks like a place that something could've gotten in and walked up the ramps that lead to one of the top floors that the chicks...

I just had my first chick hatch!

Thanks. I just went out and found a small metal trough in my yard, so I cleaned it up and put some hay/grass in it. I don't have the chick in a heated crock pot, just the ceramic pot part of it. My main problem is keeping my dogs and cats away from the chicks, so I can't just use something...

I just had my first chick hatch!

Now what??? After my neighbor died, I took over caring for all of her chickens. I go down to her coop every day, at the same time, so I can be sure to grab up all of the eggs so nobody starts sitting. Well, a while back, and I marked the day, one mean little hen started sitting on what started...

    Best goat breed for pets?

I have Pygmies, Nigerians, Nubians, a La Mancha, and Boers; the Boers are my most affectionate goats, but they certainly aren't small.

Thinking about buying one of these

No, goldencomet, I haven't bought it yet because of the price vs quality issue. Since I have time, I'm going to look elsewhere and have somebody help me build a nice coop.

Thinking about buying one of these

gryeyes, thanks for the links; I saw the ones on CL, but I need a run too. That last link, with the guy who built one of your coops, looks good; do you know what kind of pricing he has? I don't have much to spend.

Thinking about buying one of these

I've only got one rooster and two hen chicks. I'm very mechanically inclined, but not strong. I've looked at all the photos and plans for coops, but I'd have to include the cost of buying all of the tools it would take to build my own, into the price of the coop. So, I've been looking for...

    Next new chick question

I have my two chicks in the house, in a guinea pig cage...the kind with the 4 inch deep plastic bottom and the wire top. It is in the 90's outside, but I took the advice to use a heat lamp and just bought one. I also had a hanging IV stand, so I attached that to the cage that the chick's cage...

okay, next question about new chickens

The rooster that I found, and have been holding on my lap every night, lets me rub and scratch his neck under his feathers. Problem is...little tiny reddish orange creepy crawlies about the size of maybe a very skinny flea, but bigger than lice that goats get. WHAT ARE THESE and what will they...

    Got my first chicks today!

Oh, Little Jerry won't be getting near my hens. I want eggs to EAT, not to hatch. I'm already addicted to goats and I started with just one and now have 12.

    Got my first chicks today!

Thanks everybody! Do I still need a heat lamp while they're living in my house? If I do, I have one of those clip on lamps for reading that I could put a regular light bulb in, couldn't I? Yes, I know people say there is no reason for a rooster, unless I want chicks, and I don't, but I just...

    Got my first chicks today!

I caught a big rooster last week, Little Jerry, that somebody had abandoned at our local lake. Since he's already been dumped once in his little life, I didn't have the heart to get rid of him. So, since I'll be setting myself up for one chicken, I thought I'd get some hens so I can have eggs...

I finally got my first chicken!

OOOOOH, and I was thinking it was more towards his head! Well, I went out and held him again and lifted his ruff and didn't see anything, but I got the creepy-crawlies afterwards when I thought about it. It's a bit too soon for me to get that personal with Little Jerry.
