Road Island Red Hen can't stand up

My nine-year old daughter has a small flock of bantams and recently one of her hens exhibited similar behavior. Couldn't stand, although otherwise seemed alert. She did eat and drink. We kept her in a box for several days (maybe more than a week) and she gradually began to improve. We...

    butchering a guinea

Hi, CW. We butchered a few guineas a couple of years ago and we treated them exactly as we do our meat chickens. There were no problems and they made great gumbo and jambalaya!

I have a flock of Black Australorps if you're interested. Let me know. I have a few birds I would be willing to sell. I am near McComb, but come to Jackson frequently and could meet you somewhere if you want the birds.

    Daytime Predator

A friend of mine lost a bird yesterday morning. He let the chickens out of their coop and about 10:00 a.m. found one headless carcass in the corner of his chicken yard. He's seen both skunks and racoons about, but I think it is really odd for them to attack during the day. Today, he lost a...

I live in Pike County, east of Summit. Anybody here near me? I have a batch of Freedom Rangers going now (2 weeks old) as well as a flock of Australorps laying hens and a roaming flock of guineas.

    Tyson "chickens out" (business article)

There is a neat website, stillmadeinusa.com that lists lots of different items that have not been outsourced if anyone is interested in taking a look. It's interesting.

    Water for plucking

We use water heated to 145 degrees and dip the birds in and out of the water for one minute. The results of this have always been very good. Any cooler, and we don't get good feather release, any hotter and the birds' skin will often tear. This, at least, has been our experience.

    Freedom Ranger equivalents

And that is exactly the question I have had about these birds. If you want to raise them slowly for 81 days or so, what should they be fed? I would love to know. I would really like to feed these birds a lower protein ration for a longer period of time, but getting a clear answer about this...

New Information on JM Hatchery Redbros!!

What differences do you expect to find between the different color varieties from JM Hatchery? Is there a particular reason to raise one color variety over another?

Question on feed for Red Bro

What do you feed yours? I would really like to get away from game bird feed, but will feed it if necessary. Would it if work to feed some of the high protein feed with additional grains? That would give me a lower protein % than 22, and I know the birds would grow more slowly, but I'm fine...

Question on feed for Red Bro

I am finishing up what will be, hopefully, my last batch of Cornish X. I'd really like to go to Red Bros, but I would also like to feed my chickens a diet based more on grains available at the local feed mill and get away from using non-medicated commercial game bird feeds, which has become so...
