We've received two orders from Schlecht. Etta was always very nice to deal with and the chicks were great. Our last batch, processed at 8 weeks old last July 4th were flying over the 2' tall tractor sides on processing day. Healthy birds! Will always order from Schlechts until they get so...
Meyers says you can expect CX's to eat 18-20 pounds of 20% Protein feed from day old chick to processing size at 7-8 weeks. Our experience has been, with moving them to fresh grass everyday in our tractor and keeping them on a 12 hour feed schedule, we've averaged 14 lbs per bird. With the...
Whereabouts in Virginia are you, HeavyGear? If you're near Glen Allen, I could show you our set up. We use stock tanks as the brooder for the first couple of weeks and then move them into a mobile tractor. We built our tractor so that it could easily be tken down and stored when not in use...
Our CX's went through 12lbs of feed at 7 weeks. We averaged 4.5lbs per dressed carcass. They were raised in a tractor that was moved every day. However, being CX's, they didn't eat much grass -- too much effort involved. :-)
A lot of folks on here sell their CX's for $3-4 (or more) per...
Be patient with the ones that haven't hatched. I've had them hatch over a five day period on several hatches.
Always cool to see. They look like little bumble bees, don't they?
Best of luck!

I am pretty sure a bird that takes 2-3 more weeks doesn't eat twice as much food, but I guess we will just have to see exactly how much these birds eat... I am not into raising birds that eat themselves to death... To each his own... I prefer to raise a bird that will forage and not...
I spoke with someone in my local Congressman's office yesterday about this. (Congressman Eric Cantor's office.) His aide said that the changes would affect 1st, 2nd, & 3rd class mail. Priority Mail is a money maker for the USPS and would not be impacted by these changes.

Agree completely. I was very pleased with Schlecht's. Good birds. Good people. I WILL order from them again. Our CX's were processed at 7 weeks and averaged 4.5lbs dressed.
Just outside of Richmond here. Had lots of rain. I didn't think the wind was all that bad. Plenty of downed trees around the area though. We lost power at 4:30 on Saturday afternoon and got it back just before lunchtime today (Monday). All the critters are fine. Thankful here.
Same thing happened to me two weeks ago. Four foot black snake in my quail cage with one in its belly. I took it out to my two American Guinea Hogs. THey took care of it. I considered it barnyard teamwork. The hogs were taking up for the little quail.
Quail Lady,
I didn't think you'd done anything to cause a ruckus. Actually, of all your posts I've seen they've always been helpful.
Glad to hear you've had some quail live so long. I'm new to quail, but I recall reading they didn't live so long. Glad to know that's not necessarily the...

You can feed coturnix 30% GBS from hatch until the ripe old age of 5 years+ of age. I have done it!
You can feed your buttons, BOBS, ZAMBIAN GUTTERSNIPES, what ever you like!
You can feed COTURNIX quail 30% GBS for ever! Well...at least for about 5 years. After that, then you...
