    Sounds like she has an abscess. Can you express the pus out of it? Just gently squeeze it out, it will smell terrible, btw. Use a syringe without the needle and irrigate it with saline, not hydrogen peroxide. Spray it with Vetericyn or wash it out with Dakin's Solution that you make up yourself...

    In addition to the soaks and calcium, place her in a dark room to interrupt her laying cycle until the stuck egg passes. This will also help prevent EYP.

    It sounds like a respiratory infection. Do you have access to antibiotics? If you have Oxytetracycline it is a broad spectrum antibiotic and water soluble. Tylan is no longer sold, unfortunately but if you still have it use it.

    I have a few pens of Silkies and they are my most broody breed. I keep the pens separate because broodiness is contagious, as you've noticed. They're good moms and I occasionally slip other breeds' eggs under them. They'll also take on much bigger birds to protect their chicks.

    Not all breeds are prone to broodiness. If you want a true broody hen get yourself a Silkie, they're always broody. Yours is a mix of Rock and Rhode Island Red?

    That should work. Put a thermometer in the brooder to check temperature. First week for chicks should be 95f and decrease 5 degrees each week. I keep my brooder in the barn and they stay warm even when it's 20f outside.
