Google the recipe for Dakin's Solution. Most ingredients are things one usually has around the house. It's basically the same as Vetericyn but much more cost effective and if stores are closed, good to know how to make it.
I've been using the large heat plates from Premier for my last batch of ducklings. Works out so much better than the heat lamp. Can you put hot water bottles down for now until you get something else? Even filling up soda bottles with hot water is better than them piling up on each other. Hope...
Sounds like she has an abscess. Can you express the pus out of it? Just gently squeeze it out, it will smell terrible, btw. Use a syringe without the needle and irrigate it with saline, not hydrogen peroxide. Spray it with Vetericyn or wash it out with Dakin's Solution that you make up yourself...
This sounds like Wry Neck. Easily resolved with Vitamin E and Selenium. Tractor Supply has a gel made for goats but works very well for wry neck, just give her a bit on her beak at least twice a day.
I agree that the other sounds like Fowl Pox which the vectors are mosquitoes. There is a...
I have lots of bushes and trees for them to run under. I also have a couple of Anatolians that keep watch over the chickens and ducks. The dogs live with the poultry 24 x 7 and no predators get near them. In the more open areas I have fishing line criss crossed over the area with CDs hanging...
In addition to the soaks and calcium, place her in a dark room to interrupt her laying cycle until the stuck egg passes. This will also help prevent EYP.
It sounds like a respiratory infection. Do you have access to antibiotics? If you have Oxytetracycline it is a broad spectrum antibiotic and water soluble. Tylan is no longer sold, unfortunately but if you still have it use it.
I have a few pens of Silkies and they are my most broody breed. I keep the pens separate because broodiness is contagious, as you've noticed. They're good moms and I occasionally slip other breeds' eggs under them. They'll also take on much bigger birds to protect their chicks.
Hopefully everything turned out well. If this happens again check your humidity level and if necessary add water if you can without opening the incubator.
Happy hatching!
Not all breeds are prone to broodiness. If you want a true broody hen get yourself a Silkie, they're always broody. Yours is a mix of Rock and Rhode Island Red?
That should work. Put a thermometer in the brooder to check temperature. First week for chicks should be 95f and decrease 5 degrees each week. I keep my brooder in the barn and they stay warm even when it's 20f outside.
I agree with the Naked Necks. I'm just outside of Phoenix and my Naked Neck hens lay throughout the summer. I also have White Minorca and they're not bothered by the heat either. My Orpingtons need to be sent up north for the summer, they just can't handle the heat.
Welcome to AZ and BYC!
That sounds more like Coccidiosis. You'll need to treat them with Corid, 2 tsp to 1 gal of water every day for 5 days. If you're feeding medicated feed remove it and give non-medicated. Keep their brooder clean and dry.
Sometimes they stand like a penguin, look like they're straining but sometimes there aren't any signs. I had an ISA Brown that was fine, went into her nestbox, then passed and it was due to being eggbound. I beat myself up for not catching it but sometimes they just don't show any signs. Be kind...
What makes you think the Delaware might be a cockerel? Does it have saddle feathers and hackle feathers? Is it crowing? btw, your "Ameraucanas" are most likely Easter Eggers unless you bought them from a breeder and they told you the specific variety. There are currently 8 recognized varieties...
I'm so sorry you lost your little Misty. The cause was most likely eggbound. Some hens are more prone to it then other breeds. Was she a production breed? I've found the production/hybrid breeds are more susceptible. Again, so sorry for your loss.
