I'd like to add two layers to my flock. Looking for two hens 1-2 yrs. Old. I really like barred rocks, orpingtons and leghorns but I'm open to other birds of similar size. Located in Westbrook, Maine.
My hen has been standing upright for several days now. Otherwise, she is acting completely normal:
1) What type of bird , age and weight (does the chicken seem or feel lighter or thinner than the others.) Orpington, not quite 3 yrs old, weight seems normal compared to others.
2) What is the...
I'm looking to add two hens to my flock and I've been having difficulty finding some in my area for sale. While I adore chicks, I don't have time to care for babies right now. So I was hoping for a couple 5 mos. up to about a 1 old. Looking for standard sized girls who will lay nice sized...
I found that vets in my area don't advertise that they treat chickens, but some actually do. You could call different offices and ask - even if its not common for them, they may have experience. Good luck.
I have a hen just shy of 2 years old. Starting 8 days ago, I noticed she had white watery diarrhea and she was acting very lethargic. After a couple days, I brought her into the house and started her on probiotics and vitamins in her water. I've been feeding her greens, scrambled eggs with...
Just put my order in at the local Paris Farmers Union for 6 chicks. They'll be in the beginning of May. 2 Brown Leghorns and 4 Silver Laced Wyandottes. So excited!!
I'm planning on expanding our yard and redoing the chicken yard, giving them more room. One thing I've noticed is my pathway back and forth becomes unattractive/muddy. Do you think it would be okay to use a pea stone pathway in the chicken yard? Should I be concerned about the chickens trying...
Had my first double yolk today! The egg was very large - the largest we've had and today my daughter cracked it open for lunch and there it was. I was so excited I screamed....daughter was not impressed. Not sure if it came from my barred rock or buff orpington, but they are all about 8 mos. old.
It was about 12 degrees today and I got 5 eggs from 8 hens. One of my leghorns has gone a little crazy the last couple of days and appears to have laid an egg from her perch first thing in the morning. So I've opened up the coop to a cracked frozen egg on the floor of the coop two mornings in...
How do you think hens feel when we take their eggs? Everytime I take eggs out of the nesting box, I have one Orpington that runs over to check it out. I get the feeling that she's wondering where her egg went. Am I crazy? What do you think?
