I don't think they are poisenous as I see lots of birds eating them. However does anyone know if the seeds pass through the chickens and get spread everywhere? I hate privet because they spread and grow so quickly.
I was wondering about that as well. I dissected an older hen once and found a series of eggs in different stages of development. There was one about to be laid with a hard shell, two or three with just a membrane, and then lots that looked like different sizes of yokes.
I am starting to see a lot of watery whites as well, but the yoke is still well rounded. all eggs are less than 4 days old, but my chickens are almost 3 years old so I think that is is cause. I am going to start paying attention to which chickens are laying the running ones.
I don't think it needs to be black, it just needs to keep light out. Light is what allows the algae to grow. Painting it white or silver to help reflect light not absorb it as heat and it will help keep it cooler.
