Injured leg - what to look for?

Thank you. I found the poultry podiatry website the first evening of treatment...it has been very helpful!!! That first evening, I extended the girl's leg back as described for a slipped tendon. She did seem more comfortable afterward but still won't bear weight on it. There is no swelling...

The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

OH MY! I am so sorry for your loss!!!

Pecked hen reintroduced and taken out again.

Are all of the others pecking at her? Or just one in particular? I had a scare a few weeks back with a brutal pecking attack. The injured one was inside for 2 weeks while the skin healed over in a large dog crate. I then moved it outside and had her in the crate next to the run for few...

Injured leg - what to look for?

I put it in the title...but also, is there something in particular I should be looking for? Is the fact that she's curling her toes and bending her leg up good (eg muscle pull not broken bone?). Also, the the dog crate has no roosts in it and has a nice deep litter of dry pine shavings so...

Injured leg - what to look for?

Today, my daughter was out playing with the chickens. I didn't see what happened but apparently she was holding our California White Leghorn (18 weeks old). She wanted down and flew off - in quite a commotion (she freaks out at the littlest things). The dog got in the mix trying to see what...

    California - Northern

Oh. I just saw your other thread...size of a quarter is nothing compared! But still...I have hope for you. They are surprisingly resilient little gals!

    California - Northern

I'm no expert by any means but had a pullet scalped by another a few weeks back. Really really ugly wound. Down to the neck muscle - about the size of a quarter. We rinsed it with saline and packed it with neosporin. She was inside for about 2 weeks before it scabbed over and then fell off...

    California - Northern

Hi all! I'm relatively new to the forums so thought I'd take a minute to introduce myself. I've had chickens on/off for a few years and heavily relied on advice given here but have hid in the shadows. I live about a half hour south of San Francisco on the coast. I literally have 'backyard...

    dogs and chickens

My lab (3 yo) gets along great with the chickens. She mostly ignores them unless she's following behind them to eat the 'treats' they drop. If 2 pullets are acting up, she will sometimes go over to investigate...which is enough to break up the fight. She's never chased one or heaven forbid...

Pecking order - my bully chicken

Thanks everyone for your responses! They are all out in the yard right now. And seem to be getting along just great. Of course, Pippy chased Pumpkin off initially but they've settled into a comfortable routine of eating grass, bugs and rolling in the dirt. It's once they are all locked back...

Free range egg prices. opinions please!

Here in Northern California, it's not unusual to see organic free range eggs selling for $7-8/dozen at the farmer's markets. $3/dozen is a steal!

Pecking order - my bully chicken

Hi everyone! I'm kinda new on here. Actually I've been loitering and trolling the website for years but have never gotten to the point that I couldn't find the answers I needed. I've hit that spot now. A little history, I had backyard chickens for a few year then had to re-home them to a...
