One of my hens has been sat on a pair of eggs, and today one hatched while I was out, and was killed. I'm assuming killed, as it looked like it had been trying to escape. The other is pipping, and I've set up the incubator to move it into when it hatches until I can set up a small brooder...
My Christmas present from my parents was a 6 month old Celestial Parrotlet hen, and I'm thrilled with her~
However, she's the first of this sort of bird that I've owned, and I don't -really- know how to start bonding with her. She was hand-raised, but I don't know how much contact she's had in...
They're both Chinese Painted, just different colours. Dad looks like a normal silver to me, and mum is the same as my bird, who I was told is a red breasted (blue), though I'm not sure if that's right.
Different species of Quail can't be bred together.
Can't help you on splitting though, I'm afraid.
I have a -large- cage that I have a couple of quail in the bottom of, but because it's so big, I'd like to be able to keep another bird species in there. I'm aware that most parrots, parakeets, etc, are out of the question, but I wondered what my options actually were? I assume Parrotlets...
Oh, I wasn't blaming them. I just was wondering if it'd help me sex some of the more difficult birds - in particular, the tuxedos and silver, as I noticed that none of the confirmed hens had plucked backs, but there were signs of it on the red breasted males. If it is a case of the hens doing it...
Split my chicks into groups today (they're a few days off 6 weeks) after noticing that one of them had a bare back with a spot of blood.
It's a dark faced cinnamon, so I can't really tell the sex, but would a plucked back be an indication of sex at all? I noticed one of the other chicks, a...
I got an early Christmas gift today; another pair of Chinese Quail. :D Now I have 2 mature pairs, 10 chicks and a some silver/dark faced silver boys that I'll be selling. xD
It's nice to have these, means I have 2 mature hens. I'm not sure if the new one is laying, since they're fairly young...
I was pretty sure it was a hen due to the barring on the feathers - it has it all over, whereas I would only expect to see barring on the backs of red breasted males and blue breasted males, etc, where they have the brown feathering along their backs? Also, it has a pale brown bib, no white, and...
My 10 chicks are now 5 weeks old, maybe a little more, and I think they're a little easier to tell apart now, colour-wise. There's one chick, though, that I have no clue on.
This is her:
I originally thought cinnamon, but she (I'm also assuming hen) has some strange colours. One the...
I actually recommend only clipping on one wing - I have personally found that they just get used to compensating for not having the feathers if you do both, but clipping one completely off-sets their balance. I have done it for all my quail, Japanese and Chinese, and although it doesn't...
Well, darn.
I'm now pretty certain the dark faced is a boy, which means I'll have to sell one of them. Not sure about the silver - it's 3 weeks younger, so I don't know..
I'll have a go at vent sexing it, but I'm new to vent sexing with both ducks and quail, so I might get it totally wrong. XD
I used plastic D-shaped pots that I hook onto the wire on the cages for the Japanese, and for my Chinese, I simply have a raised platform where I put their dish - they never get shavings in their water and don't poop in it when I do that. Very useful~
I bought a 'trio' of silver laced (dark faced) chinese quail mid october. I was told that 1 was a male, 8 weeks, and 2 were hens, 8 weeks and 5 weeks. The younger bird is actually just a silver, and now I'm a bit concerned about what sexes the two 'hens' are.
They're about 14 weeks and 11...
