hen is injured- looks like bites- how do I dress the wounds

Thanks for the replies- I'd already washed the wounds with a 25% hydrogen peroxide solution, but I won't use it again. I also spread some homemade blu-kote (honey mixed with a few drops of tea-tree oil and blue food coloring) on it for its anti-bacterial properties. There actually weren't...

hen is injured- looks like bites- how do I dress the wounds

Came home from work tonight to a bunch of feathers from my 9-month old Ancona. found her hanging out in the veggie patch, acting pretty normal (she ate a treat that I offered her), but she has clearly been attacked by something, and there are a couple of puncture wounds. The most damage is on...

    Lonely Duck?

I've had 2 orpington ducks (both hens) for about 2 1/2 years, but last week something got into the backyard while I was at work and got one of them. They were inseparable, calling out whenever one was out of sight of the other, so now I'm worried about the remaining one. In addition, the chicken...

Chicken Diary Friday, July 1, 2011 Got the girls Monday evening: Trixie (Rhode Island Red), Jemima (Buff Orpington), and Charlotte (Barred Rock). They are different ages, but all between 6 and 8 weeks old. The coop isn't done yet (hopefully will be this weekend), so they are living in an old...

    Utah!

A couple of questions regarding the cold weather-- I have read/heard that to prevent frostbite on combs and other exposed skin, one should smear vaseline on them- but how cold are we talking here? I haven't done it so far (and we had some pretty cold weather in SLC a couple of weeks ago) and my...

Help with figuring out the breed?

Thanks so much for the quick responses! I am going to say they're Buffs. And females. No idea how old they are, though- the vet thought probably a couple of months. I've not seen any eggs, so I figure they're young'uns. Of course, I've only had them since Friday.

Help with figuring out the breed?

Hi! My vet gave me a couple of ducks that she found in her neighborhood (she kept them for several days while she tried to find out where they belonged but no one claimed them). She thought they were Khaki Campbells, but based on the pictures I've seen here it looks to me like they may be Buff...

Pictures of BO dust bath. :-)

Mine will also take "sun baths" where they will lie on one side with a leg and a wing stretched out. The first time my sister, who was visiting, saw them do this she gasped and asked if they were okay. It does make them look a little like roadkill.

    Beauty and Brains

I love the idea of the spaghetti. I will definitely have to try that!

I also went out with a handful of (cooked) macaroni, which they loved. It was hilarious to watch them chase around to try to steal it from each other. Since I was sitting right there with more in my hand they really didn't need to fight over it... hmmm. Maybe they are a little prettier than they...

Inexpensive options for solar lighting for egg production

I'm wondering the same thing... I don't have electricity out to my coop so would really like to try solar.

I just put a new 5-gallon-bucket-with-chicken-nipples waterer in my coop, and it took my girls all of about 30 seconds to figure it out. They're obviously very smart.

Should I start them on medicated feed?

Thanks for the quick replies! Looks like I'll need to decide myself... I have a Rhode Island Red, a Buff Orpington, and a Barred Rock. They are sweeties and I am so excited to be raising chickens!
