Marshall Brown on Two Bear Acres
Our very first brooder box.
So, we decided to start raising chickens....................
Thanks to many of the posts on this site, we were able to come up with, what we think, is a pretty cool brooder box. Our chicks...
Thats great information! Still wondering about putting them back in with the flock after they have healed. What is the best way to do that? What are the chances of this happening again?
Oddly enough, I had a similar situation with one of my reds today. We found that she had been pecked hard enough to create about a dime sized hole in the top of her head. It doesnt appear that her brain matter is exposed but it could have happened easily enough if we did not discover it sooner...
Waiting is the hardest part. We have just made it past the 20 week mark and expect an egg any day now. We have a friend watching our girls while we are away camping this coming weekend and I'll be very hurt if I miss that first egg!!!
I want to thank everyone for the advice on my one sick chick who ended up passing last night. I tried what I could to see if she would thrive but, it didnt work and then this morning another of the smaller three had passed. I am hoping that this third one, will make it. She seemed the strongest...

I took Fred's advice and went to the link for the thread he was talking about. It was helpful and informative. Give it a look second from the top of this page!!

We did not get any electrolytes or vitamins for water. Picking up more chick feed today and I will pick up some. I have seen her drink and have been trying to encourage her to get to the feeder. She is smaller than the rest of them but so darn cute. If I rally her to get up, she'll walk...
Hey Pat, thanks for that advice!! Its very helpful. What do you have for flooring in your coop. I was planning on putting down a scrap on vinyl floor. Figured it would be easy to clean and help seal up any draft from the plywood floor.

Hey thanks for the great words of encouragement!! They seem to like the brooder. Chirping contently, eating, drinking and pooping, heh heh. The brooder is really a large cardboard box, we just made a wooden cover for it. I was afraid to go all out before I actually had more experience with...
I cant believe how excited I am!! We got our 8 new RR's day and they are so darn cute! Of course I wont sleep at all tonight making sure they are all ok. Its really hard not to pick them out of the brooder and play with them but I am being good and letting them alone to get used to the new...
We live up in NH and the winters can get pretty harsh. I was told to insulate the coop when we build it but, what is best for insulating? I was just going to put in regular fiberglass insulation covering the walls in a 1/4" plywood. Is there a better idea? I assume I should use a heat lamp in...
I am wicked excited! Our chicks arrive on Friday and I am really looking forward to it. I know they say to get them familiar with you and handle them but how often should you do this? I dont want to keep taking them out of the toasty brooder too often.
