A hawk just took care of another of my girls...leaving me with one lone free ranger. I'm trying to decide what to do as we approach winter. I can't get any other birds right now so i'm wondering if she can go it alone through the winter or if i should give her to a friend who has a small flock...
I have a golden comet normal in every way except I've heard a slight honking, almost like a croupy cough from her. The book that I have about raising chickens doesn't have info on this nor any other significant disease...and why is that these books that glamourize keeping backyard chickens fail...
I find myself with one very lonely golden comet since her two sisters passed on...one from a predator, the other an internal layer. The "lone ranger" isn't happy so I'm getting two birds in a few weeks...about 17 weeks. Any ideas on good ways to introduce them all?
Interesting about the artificial light...I was overly impressed by the fact that my 3 laid eggs all throughout an Ohio winter. Maybe I'll rethink that. Any other comments about that?
Thanks...i don't think she was malnourished...she seemed awfully big...unless that's a symptom. She was energetic, too. That's what i can't figure out. Thanks for the reply.
good explanation of internal laying too...
I just found my Golden Comet dead...she hadn't laid for 3 months, but was not egg bound and didn't show any signs of distress. Over the past few days, i noticed she was losing feathers which i considered molting. She still ate, spared for scraps with the others but today, dead. I'm at a loss for...
This is my second season of chicken "rustling." Started out with 3 birds. One died. Two have carried on, except that one has completely stopped laying eggs...she sits on the nest in the morning for a while (regardless of whether or not the other birds has laid her egg), goes through the motions...
Getting ready for winter and wondering if anyone has any ideas for newbie on how to keep water from freezing...only 3 birds in my coop and i keep a large waterer outside in the run and a waterbottle suspended in the coop.
A hawk has found my backyard flock of 3...not a chicken to spare! Hasn't been a problem until now...aside from putting up netting over the run area (small enough to do so), what else can I do to encourage the hawk to look elsewhere for his next meal? I live in a residential neighborhood and my...
I have 3 golden comets and want to start thinking ahead about how to winter them...the coop i have two tiered. The bottom where they can be on the ground is all screen. The top is solid wood on 3 sides but in the front there is a screen. The floor of the top section is also solid. Great for...
I am a couple of weeks into being a new chicken keeper/farmer... whatever you want to call it...although i only have 3 backyard beauties. They are all pullets 18 weeks or so...two have been giving me an egg a day (10AM on the dot!) for a week. The other laid something today that I thought was...
