    Managing on their own

I had three hens. A few years ago, from goodness knows where, a beautiful cockerel moved in. My girls fell under his charms and last year one hen successfully raised two birds; one of each. A little after Roger (the lodger cockerel) moved in, another cockerel appeared in the orange groves around...

    Anyone on Costa Blanca South?

Hi Elaine Seems that it's just us in this part of the world then eh? I have three hens. One is an old lady of four and the other two are about 2 now. The old lady doesn't lay, but she looks after the others. She likes her back scratched. We're lucky in this part of the world as we don't seem...

    Two Eggs in One Day?

Yesterday when I went to the coop where my three hens live, there were FOUR eggs. Now is that normal? They were definitely all from that morning because I took out three eggs the day before.

    egg shell changing colour/loosing colour

I should have pointed out that I only have three hens, so the shell-less egg was number 4!

    egg shell changing colour/loosing colour

This is interesting, because this morning when I went to feed my girls, in their enclosure was an egg without a shell (just had the membrane which had broken) but inside the coop were three eggs - two brown and one pure white. My hens are only about 7-8 months old by the way.

keeping chickens cool in summer heat

My girls don´t have to suffer 100 degrees, but certainly it gets up to 80. I get the hose out and make their run sodden so that they are paddling in water. They love it because it also softens up the ground so they can ferret around more. Their eggs are really big now (I´ve only had them since...

    Our First Egg!!!!!

How crazy am I? I got very excited when I found our very first egg this morning. It´s a bit small, as we expected, but we´re on a roll now, I hope!

    Cross Continental Friends!!!

Ok, a bit about me. I`m obviously old as I´m a pensioner. I´m British, but opted four years ago to move to Spain for many reasons... the pace of life, sunshine, Spanish people (far happier than English generally). We (my husband and I) have lived in Spain for just over four years now, but have...

    Chicken Virgin

Hi Slowbill Thank you for your offer, but I don´t think I´m ready to do the incubation bit yet. I may take you up on your offer at a later stage, but as I am still a relative chicken-keeping novice I think I´d worry myself to death that I wasn´t doing it right. I´ve got three girls now and...

    My Three Girls

I´d be interested if anyone can identify what type of chickens we have, but whatever they are, after only just over a week, they are really starting to develop personalities and are really quite friendly. My grandchildren were over for a visit from the UK this week and we waited until they...

Outside Space for my Three Ladies

Well, we´ve finally made the leap and now have three beautiful ladies. I think they´re Rhode Island Reds, but really not sure and as I bought them in Spain from a Spaniard I couldn´t quite work out what he said, except they are good layers. I´ll try and get some pictures once the girls settle...

Comment by 'Pensionista' in article '"Hinkel Haus" made of pallets & recycled wood pickets'

From a total novice´s point of view, this was extremely interesting. I am not starting out on the hen-keeping road until the spring, but I really can´t wait. I´m learning a lot from this website and posts like this. Thank you.
