Yeah, I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop. After re-homing most of my first batch I learned not to get too attached. He’s my favorite, and is a joy so far, but if it doesn’t work out my biggest problem will be finding a humane processor. 🤷🏻♀️
Thank you! If I’m lucky she’ll start around the same time as the younger girls.
I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop on Spot. He was a nice chick, and he’s so mellow I keep wondering if there’s something wrong with him. He’s a beautiful boy, and he does like to show off, but I haven’t seen...
So had to give away three of my five original chicks (four of the batch were boys). This is sort of important to my question. My leftover boy (Spot) and girl (Sylvia) were on their own for about six weeks while a new batch of chicks were prepped. All are now coexisting well in a small flock...
Was going to say the same. Check every night to make sure everyone's in the coop, and since I need a flashlight to do the count everyone wakes up. I think talking to them as I walk up to the door makes a difference: they know it's not the chicken murderer come to do them in so they settle down...
Thanks! Sadly after re-homing extra cockerels I only have 1 EE pullet plus 1 cockerel (wanted a roo so I could let them free range now and then). But raising six(!) SL Wyandotte chicks from TSC now. Wasn't willing to take a chance on more boys, all they had this late in the "chick season" were...
Just an update: all four were roosters (and a little older than I thought), and today they went to a local rancher who'd ordered a bunch of chicks from a hatchery, expecting a couple would turn out to be boys. None of them did, so they needed roosters almost as much as my boys needed a home...
After getting home and doing more research I'm thrilled to hear this! It was an emergency purchase: my first time out got chicks from a local lady and 4 of 5 are boys. Wasn't even sure I could get chicks this late in the TSC season, familiar with Orpingtons so asked for those.
I'm so excited...
Yeah, had to take the screen shots from a video. Thought I'd taken more pics, but no good ones, and they're all asleep now. This is them from above, and you can see the different marking on the backs, but only the "fancy" ones have the obvious facial markings.
Got a new batch of chicks at TSC today. Brooder had "Mixed Color Orpingtons" and "Silver Laced Wyandottes" (not gonna swear the Wyandotte sign said silver laced, but pretty sure). So, told the guy I wanted 6 Orpingtons. Couldn't really tell one from the other, and I know the Orpingtons said...
I have a cat named Cookie, and I adopted her with her entire litter of kittens. Don't think she let the kittens ride on her back, though, so Chicken Cookie has the advantage! 🙂
