Our Sombra will be 11 this year! I remember when we joined here with her sisters to find out what chicken owning life was like. Momma had been gifted four cuties and I needed help in all things chicken. This place and the FB group have been so warm and welcoming. We have lost three along the way...

    Feathers and Molting?

I thank you all for the advice . So far I am looking into the suggestions and seeing what could work best for our little flock. We even got I believe the right food to help them grow back too. So I again thank you all for the lovely words. My little hennies love ya for it ^_^.

    Feathers and Molting?

We do a egg lay mash. It comes in those bags from universal feeds. Sometimes we do get crumbles most of all just mash. As treats we do give them corn. That they do love fresh off the cobb. I also heard from someone way back that sunflower seeds helped to provide extra protein. I will see what...

    Feathers and Molting?

What else could be concidered high in protein that we can give them if we cant find mixes? I dont want to end up seeing them without feathers. And even still would new ones grow back? I didnt think I would see shedding especially in my chickens. We dont have puppies but we sure feel like it with...

    Feathers and Molting?

Recently I have noticed a sea of buff feathers all over the place. I am no stranger to molting in birds since before we got the chickens we had our last little parakeet still alive. My question is are all those feathers normal parts of molting or parts of something bigger. I have noticed that...

Can a hen crow like a rooster?

Well I am glad it is possible then. I was just concerned not only for my sake but our neighbors hehe. I dont think its after she lays an egg I just said that because anytime I hear them cackle its because they have just layed an egg or are going to. Granted I make sure it isnt a predator since...

Finding out what chickens are at the top of the pecking order and which ones are not!

I actually figured out our 'tough' fearless leader of our flock. I know because she tends to peck at our orpington. We assumed as an orpington her body size would definitely warrant her the 'boss' status we were wrong. Silver is the one that usually hands out the pecking order. She tends to boss...

Can a hen crow like a rooster?

Recently I am noticing that one of my four girls tends to sing her egglaying song and ends it differently. Is it normal for her to actually almost crow softly like a rooster? I know its a hen because we collect eggs from her. I know her egglaying shell shape and everything. I have heard it can...

    A Chickens Love Can Comfort

I described long ago that our lives were never going to be the same when we got new chickens. And that for some part has been true. I can recall when they came to live with us. I didnt know what to expect since I knew my life would be different and change. I didnt think that after an entire year...

    Chicken Feathers...

Ooh ok sounds like I should see and try this. I was just concerned because you can see the bare spots on their chest. I know molting in birds and I dont think its that. But yeah ok we do have sunflower seeds but if they need black ones I will definitely look into putting that into their feed or...

    Chicken Feathers...

Hello again SilverMoon here with another little question. Is it normal for chickens to help each other in grooming? I dont know if it can be called grooming but we have all noted that when our black hens are taking a dirt bath their buff sisters come in and yes eat their feathers. Yesterday...

Hen Laying Softshells All The Time And Not Her Sisters...

Quote: Even so I am not quite bothered by it much. I mean I know they all eat the same food, take in the same amount of oyster shell so your right. It could be her issues and no one elses. I get that its common for some eggs to come out some of the time like that. With her its all of the time...

Lord have mercy! My chicken laid a goose egg! The biggest I ever got.

We got one pretty big as well. I think my dad was like whoa what are they being fed and can we feed them more XD. But I do believe its been said already there could be more than one yolk in there. I know in our case she gave one out the first time with two yolks inside.
