Hi everyone-
We have a firepit where we have burned branches and trees that have falled and I noticed the birds go crazy in that pile - it is great dirt underneath and seems to be lots of bugs so I thought nothing of it until I realized they seemed to be eating the charred bits too. Is this...
Thanks both of you. It is apparent to me now that I have a roo! So sad but he will have to go as we are not allowed to have roos in our neighborhood.
Thanks again,
Holli
I am really hoping not as this is my only Sussex and I really wanted this breed in my small flock of girls! Her (trying to stay hopeful) name is Cricket and she is 7 weeks old today.
Thanks so much,
Holli
Could they be Light Brahmas? My light Brahma looked similar but not until she was a little older. I think she was just a bright yellow fluff when she was just a few days older.
Cute whatever they are!
Hi everyone-
I have photos but left my camera at home, so will have to upload them tonight. In the meantime, does anyone have any photos of their Speckled Sussex older chicks - mine just turned 7 weeks old and I am very suspicious that it is a little roo. He has quite a red comb going on and...
Good to know about them maturing slowly - I was wondering why she was still smaller and had less feathers. About how much are they behind other breeds? My Light Brahma is the same age and much more feathered. When can you typically tell the sex of a Sussex?
Thanks,
Holli
I have no experience in this but this little one is becoming quite the mean little thing - bites me every chance it gets and squawks all the time! Cricket was the one that got picked on incessantly by my 5 week old Welsummer when she first came home - I separated them for a couple of days and...
Hello - I have noticed the last day or two that my little 2 week old Brahma is having really small droppings that appear almost dry when they come out. This is different than normal for her and my other 3 chicks. Could she be constipated? And if so, what can I do to help her?
Thanks so much...
Thanks for your replies. gpamela3499 - what other symptoms did your chick have?
jnjross - I do put a towel over one half of the cage - not the other because the heat lamp is there. That really hepled the others, but not her.
Thanks,
Holli
So, I have 4 chicks - one 3 week old, one 2 week old and two 1 week olds. One of the one week olds (a Speckled Sussex) chirps constantly most of the time, but especially at night. It is driving me crazy and I am not getting any sleep! They are in a rabbit cage in the living room in our small...

Hi everyone-
I am new to all this and just got my first 2 chicks last Saturday and then 2 new ones today (I was waiting on certain breeds). Many people told me it would work out fine introducing different age chicks, but it isn't going so well with my 2 1/2 week old Welsummer - she is picking...
Hi everyone-
I am completely new to this whole chickie thing and really nervous about raising chicks. I am only allowed 4 in my neighborhood and have two that I got this past Saturday (a 2 1/2 week old Welsummer and a 1 1/2 week old Buff Orp). I am picking up two more today or tomorrow - very...
Hi everyone - I am new to this whole chick thing - have two (one 2 week old Welsummer and one 1 week old BO and getting two young ones (2-3 days) today - a Speckled Sussex and a Light Brahma. My question for you is what ages can I start putting this stuff in their brooder. I wouldn't worry so...
