We have 3 hens, almost 2 yrs old. Every month, they have gradually ranged farther and farther from our yard. They always come home to roost (and lay) so that's not a concern. But they are now scattering our neighbor's mulch, 2 houses down. They hop our fence but they need a good hop and a...
Her coloring (quail) looks very similar to 2 of my feed store hens. Mine have yellowish legs and lay white eggs. I've decided they are brown leghorns. But who knows for certain
Hi there and welcome! I'm kinda new here myself (I'm mainly a lurker). If you don't mind traveling a bit, I know the feed store in High Springs currently has chicks. Bill's Feed in Trenton usually carries chicks too but I don't know when they come in stock. Also Alachua Farm and Lumber had...
Our brown RIR eggs have tougher shells too. And the yolks are a more rich yellow color than store bought.
And it's odd that you mentioned the fried texture. I always scramble my eggs but this morning my hubby offered to cook (who can refuse that?!) and his eggs were more fried than scrambled...
Twice now, we've found a squirrel in our chicken coop. We leave the door open while the girls are free ranging during the day. Do you think it's after the feed or eggs? 2 girls have only been laying for a few weeks and the egg count each day varies. 1/2/2/1/1/2, etc. I figured it was...
Am I expecting too much? I am new to chickens. They are about 5-6 mths old and free range. The only attacks have come from dogs so far (puppies, actually). And I don't think the dogs were trying to kill but their "playing" was enough to injure or kill. First time, the puppies were ours...
My 2 RIRs have begun to lay regularly, sharing a nest, but we're still waiting for the 2 EEs to lay. They are all around 23 wks. The RIRs are dominant over the EEs. I'm wondering if the EEs will even attempt to lay in the same nest as the RIRs. Or would that be a breach of the pecking order...
I noticed 2 of my pullets (approx 21 wks old) bumping chests this morning. Goldie fluffed out her feathers and ran at Felicity who then fluffed up and they began bumping chests several times (like sumo wrestlers!). They've been together for 4 months now so I assumed they had the pecking order...
Sorry, I was in a hurry when typing my original post. Here's some add'l info...
She is 2 wks old, seems to be eating and drinking OK, pooping OK, moving around OK (flying out of the cardboard box I used to isolate her), but she seems hot to the touch.
Any more ideas?
I'm posting pictures from yesterday and today. I had thought she was swollen for a few days but I'm a newbie and wasn't sure. I'm posting pics from yesterday and today. The other girls pecked her last night but I think she had some problems before they started. She's 2 wks old. Any ideas...
Is this normal? My DD's class incubated and hatched eggs so we rec'd a 1 day old chick. We wanted her to have "friends" so we bought 5 more (slightly older) from the feed store. I had heard that if they were going to pick, it would happen immediately. It's been 12 peaceful days that they...
Please help us ID these chicks. We are completely new to chickens (and BYC). DD got this first chick as a class project and the others came from the feed store.
White Leghorn??
Sorry, not such a good picture. But the chick in front....brown leghorn??
RIR ??
I'm sure we'll have...
