The Ameraucana was developed in the 70's by a few people who were trying to standardize the...
The perfect mid chickens
Pros: Docile
Good for both eggs and meat
Love the cheek fluffs
Cons: Not large eggs
Not a lot of eggs (Still good for eggs though)
I love americaunas, and they are definitely a good breed to get for eggs and meat. Very sweet when trained.
Lots of colors and once more, we love the cheek fluffs.
Great review, love it! Good job.
Love my Ameraucanas
Pros: Beautiful, friendly, adorable, gorgeous eggs, funny, curious, nice size.
Cons: Can be towards the top of the pecking order

Often confused with Easter Eggers.

Feedstores sell EEs as Ameraucanas.
Ameraucanas have always been my favorite breed. I have raised several blue wheatens, and currently have white and lavender. Have had both male and female, never had one I didn’t adore.
Purchase Price
$10, $19.95.

A True Favorite!
Pros: So adorable, super personable when raised from hatch, beautiful to look at and wonderful blue eggs to mystify your non-chicken friends with. A very intelligent chicken compared to many others.
Cons: None
I found a beautiful Easter Egger and dove into the history of the Ameraucana after. It amazed me that they were so sought after that shops used phony names! What is the wonder of this breed? I saved my pennies and shipped a few purebreds across the country and I am smitten. Beautiful funny intelligent birds who have become family overnight!

Pros: Huge beautiful blue eggs! Nice plump bird, never quarreled with flockmates.
Cons: Stopped laying for awhile, but I do believe this had more to do with environment than breed.
Very nice chickens, by far one of the best dual purpose ive ever had. The chickens were very hefty and their eggs were even more so. They had beautiful personalitiess too.
2 Ameraucanas
Pros: Good layers, ornamental, so cute, uniqueness, fluffy, cold hardy
Cons: No cons
I have 2 Ameraucanas and my favorite is Safai Rosa.

Yes Ameraucanas are my favorite chickens ever! So friendly and sweet!
Pros: Very active; good foragers; bug eaters; funny; curious, friendly; super pretty and smart; green eggs.
Cons: Small eggs; loud (2/3); "beard" gets dirty on those cup waterers.
I have 3 Ameraucanas: Pepper, Pipoca e Farofa.
  1. Farofa is the leader. She can get pretty loud when she is trying to lay or when she wants to free range.
  2. Pipoca is the second in command. The funniest of my chickens. She makes a cute little "wah-wah-wah" noise when she comes close to us. Sometimes seems she is having trouble laying, she gets anxious and pace around making some unhappy loud graspy "waaaaaah" sound. Then I grab her, give her a little petting and put her in the nesting box, and she stays there quite for a while until she lays or comes out complaining again. Loves being with the group. When let her out, and she is maybe frustrated for being locked in the run, she comes out determined, looking for trouble, straight for my garden plants, devouring them, and some reason super in a hurry, lol.
  3. Pepper is the smartest and the best forager and bug eater. She always come running towards us curious to see what we have or what we are doing. Very quiet. Rarely complains that the nesting box is occupied, but when she does... she is also pretty loud.
All tree of them let us pet their backs and are super friendly.

This is an old comment so you probably already know (if you’re still around.) but your girls are Easter Eggers, NOT Ameraucanas.
Pros: Blue/green eggs
Friendly
Pretty chickens
Cons: Not great winter layer
Loud (I mean LOUD)
Really, I love my Americana hen. Even though the eggs are tiny, they make a lovely accent to an all brown egg basket like mine. :) Every morning though, if she isn't let out early enough (in her opinion) she starts a horrible sound. And once she got so mad about nesting boxes that she lost her voice! Here she is. I have tried but can't tell which pattern she is. If you know, could you please let me know? Thanks

Really? Unless I'm thinking of another breed, don't Easter Eggers have beards?

Not necessarily, because they are technically mixed. Pure Ameraucanas always have beards and muffs. If she’s laying blue green eggs she’s an EE. She’s very pretty!

Thank you! I just did some research and your right, she is an EE. No beard, no muffs, Flag the Americana is now known as Flag the Easter Egger!
Pros: Lays beautiful green eggs, is easy to hold, a gorgeous bird in general.
Cons: Is pretty loud, can be aggressive to the rest of the flock
I love my Ameraucana. She lays lots of green-blue eggs, and she's really beautiful herself. She has a muff and beard with brown and grey feathers. While she can be skittish, once you pick her up, she's as gentle as a lamb. However, some things to keep in mind is, at least for me, she can be pretty vocal, and is louder than the rest of the flock. I've heard that Ameraucana's can be quiet too, so I'm not sure if it's just my bird. She's at the top of the pecking order, and she makes sure it stays that way. She won't hesitate to attack one of the other birds viciously if they stand up to her. But to humans, she really is quite friendly. All in all, a great breed!
Pros: Very friendly, calm, curious, bright & cheerful little birds
Cons: None
I have bantam Lavender Ameraucanas & I absolutely love them! They are so bright, curious & cheerful & the friendliest birds in my flock. They sit on me and love to be cuddled & stroked more than any other breed I have had. Even if you didn't spend time with them like I do, I think they would be savvy, smart birds. They really make excellent pets though! I have 5 & do not find any of them skittish at all. They are good fliers if that makes a difference for you, but it's a cool part of their character & maybe why some think they are skittish? The sweetest little chickens ever... 💗

Pros: Beautiful. Alert. Calm when handled.
Cons: Skittish. Have a strong pecking order even as chick's so need to give lots of space and be weary of chick's with odd behaviors.
Good description differentiating for EE and araucana.

Pros: Lovely birds, lovely eggs, cold hardy
Cons: In my opinion they don't have an interesting personality, not very outgoing, the roosters were always either fighting or just never had any gumption...
Ameraucanas were the first breed I wanted. I was instantly charmed by their beauty, eggs, and hardiness but eventually moved away from them. They are not as skittish as they once were, but Ameraucanas just never stood out in the crowd and I found them difficult to breed. When I bought a new cockerel to replace the roosters who could not tolerate being near each other, he was low in fertility and eventually died.
I moved on to other breeds and now only use my Ameraucana hens for eggs.

Pros: Bright Plumes ranging from orange and black to grey and tan. Pretty eggs ranging from pastel blue to green.
Cons: If your coop/run are not sealed they will find a way out. When they find a way out, they will start roosting in nearby trees, which usually ends badly.
I'm reviewing because I like this breed and want to share some info. If you want blue and green eggs along with a cool bearded bird... this is a great pick for you. Just make sure your run / coop is well sealed. If you let your birds free range and you have trees nearby, there's a good chance you will find them in there roosting at night, which of course can be very dangerous for predation. Rarely in my experience are Americaunas "friendly" or "tame", more often they are rather wild and flighty. I've had many of this breed though and there are a few general colors, but they're all a little different. Really fun to have them in the flock and they have such a hawk-ish look about them.

Pros: Beautiful egg layer
Cons: skittish
I had one given to me 3 years ago. She was an older hen, about 2 when I got her. She was people shy and would hide from you. She laid the most beautiful green eggs and everyone wanted them. She laid about 5 eggs a week. When I let the flock she would run like crazy after bugs. She lived for 2 years after I had her. Looking to get one in a few years.

Pros: They are very friendly and an extreamly docile breed. They lay beautiful blue eggs. They tolerate heat well and are very cold hardy.
Cons: It can be very hard to find true Ameraucanas. They do mature a little slower than some other breeds so you may not get your first egg until they are around 6 months old.
We raise blue, black and splash Ameraucanas. We adore them! The roosters are wonderful with the hens and not aggressive towards us at all. They are an excellent breed!

It's good to see a comment on this thread that differentiates between Ameraucanas and Easter Eggers.
Pros: Beautiful birds, exquisite coloring. Lovely pink or blue eggs. Good brooders.
Cons: Not super friendly. Can act really pissy when you take their eggs.
I currently have 4 Ameraucanas along with a bunch of other girls. They're my 2nd favorite dual purpose birds. I never get tired of watching them with their exquisite coloring and subtle variations. They are not pets, they're for eggs and eventually the table but I've become so fond them I'll probably keep them forever, they're just that lovely. Ours lay pale pink eggs and lovely pale turquoise eggs. Very good brooders as well.
