Pros: They are chickens. Great mothers.
Cons: Not enough branches in their family tree.
The Bresse hen is a great mother from my experience. The bird taste like any other chicken unless you finish them like the French do, but then any breed would taste like that if you finished any breed the way the French do - surprise! Duh!
Since they are hoarded by the French their bloodline here is poor at best and GFF as the monopoly here in N America isn’t helping matters for this breed. The birds die quickly because they are genetically inferior, which is due to incapable suppliers.
If you want a good Bresse flock, go to Bresse France and get your own fertile eggs from a variety of farmers and fly home, stick them under a good broody hen or throw them in a detestable incubator and cross your fingers. Good luck.

I got my chicks from Bresse Farms in Mississippi. On 9/21/2023. I also got a Roo and a Hen from a lady already grown that were born December 2023. Hen lays Medium to large cream eggs. Waiting to see how they all do. Any suggestions on feed and care?
Pros: Holds water
Cons: Don't screw together well and falls apart. Get dirty very easily. Constantly have to refill. Small holes don't facilitate cleaning. Limited application.
This was the first waterer I bought when I started raising chicks. It was ok for about an hour when the first birds decided they wanted to crap in it. This design just consumes too much of ones time.

They also fall apart at times after you fill it up and pick it up without holding the bottom. Ive had just as many that don't as that do. I do not buy these any more. When I use them its only for the first few days of the birds life if absolutely necessary.

Pros: The are not a loud goose, as fast nor nasty as a chicken and self sufficient. Big eggs.
Cons: Flying and trimming wings. Injure legs easily - be careful.
I'm sharing my review because IMO this is the best bird for the farm out there. Smaller than a goose, but bigger (males) than a chicken. They are silent. They keep the grass short and bug population down so they don't need a lot of feed. They will be the primary bird on the farm next year. They also provide a another meat variety to the chicken, pork, goose, rabbit, turkey and moo.

I'm not looking forward to the next waxing, but its better than a gander and it's gaggle screaming all day long. If you buy geese buy a female, or keep them far from the house if you nap.

The only downfall I see is that they can really fly well, but thats nothing trimming won't resolve. They have claws but I've never been clawed.

Pros: A Real Meat Bird That Can Actually Walk or Hobble and the Nicest Birds We Own
Cons: Feet and Lazy
These birds are great because of their size and friendliness. They look funny when they walk because its different from the majority of chickens. The bottom line is they can get to where they want to, especially if there is food there. I like them better than cross cornish because they walk for the most part and actually forage somewhat. They are extremely lazy, because they move to their food and lay down in place to eat. They rarely stand in one place and just go to their belly and sleep. I got them from the Amish who got them from Townline Hatchery in Michigan. These are the only birds that I will buy next year. We have one hen left. Her name is Jumbo. She's 4.5 months old and I don't think she's laying yet. If she is they are the small ones that we just started getting. Rooster were not mean. Their size and clumsy feet keeps them from effectively fornicating.

Pros: Broody, pretty, good mothers
Cons: Poor meat, adapt poorly, skittish, not social and average layers.
I'd never buy them again from a hatchery unless I seen their parents. Bantam cochins are so much better, just tiny eggs...

Pros: Pretty and good foragers
Cons: Skittish and get sick easily and die quickly as chicks
I bought 15 and I'm down to 9. 3 died from cocci and 6 caught it from whatever. My areas are clean - didn't get it. Anyhow, they are all fine now, but skittish. At four months old they are very pretty. I like 'm. We'll see if they last.
