The Marans, or French, Poule de Marans, is a French breed of chicken from the port town of Marans, in the département of Charente-Maitime, in the Poitou-Charentes region of western France. It was created with the local feral chickens descended from fighting game chickens carried from Indonesia and India. Those original Marandaise fowl were "improved" for the table through crossing with imported Croad Langshans. A favourite at poultry shows, it became a dual purpose breed known both for its extremely dark brown eggs and fine meat qualities.

Marans are generally quiet and docile; but they are quite active, taking well to free ranging in rough terrain and are also tough and disease-resistant. Their gentle temperaments and quiet demeanor makes them ideal for suburban backyard chicken keepers, as well as any assorted farm flock as they rarely bully smaller breeds. Marans are historically a dual-purpose bird, prized not only for their dark eggs but for their table qualities as well. Though the original Marans could also be feather legged birds, British breeders preferred the clean legged version, and thus feathered legged Marans are now mainly found in France. The Australian Poultry Standard recognises both feathered and clean-legged birds, while the Marans Club of America only recognises feather-legged birds.

mystic marans
Pros: very pretty dark brown eggs, friendly
Cons: lays really big eggs, which can cause the hen to become egg bound
I've only had one maran, she was a mystic maran. She was very sweet, laid huge dark brown eggs, had a big build, although not overweight. I don't remember her much because she died a long time ago. I think she probably died because she got egg bound.

Cuckoo Marans
Pros: Dark brown eggs

Not a bully

Very beautiful
Cons: Can go broody (good or bad)

A little skittish

Near bottom of pecking order
I love the cuckoo marans, Kiki. She’s pretty sweet, but a little skittish. Right now she went broody for the first time.
Her eggs are currently my favorite in the basket, though they’re not super dark brown. (Attached picture is of my EE, Australorp, and Marans egg)

Overall, I would recommend. In my experience, can be a little skittish, but I still love Kiki to pieces, even if she doesn’t like to be held.

Pros: Enjoy those dark brown eggs, overall a nice bird
Cons: Not the most productive hens, dark brown is only consistent at the beginning
I really wanted to add dark brown egg layers to my little flock. They are a pretty bird with a fairly even temperament. The first eggs were very dark & they lay quite well. But they didn't have a very long laying spell for a first year chicken. They quit entirely for the winter & are slow to get going in the spring. The dark egg definitely gets lighter & never gets as dark as the 1st summer again... but still darker than the average brown layer. I haven't decided whether to get them again mostly because I find them not terribly productive even at about a year old & that the really dark initial eggs never get that dark again.
Overall.. would recommend trying them for a little colour in your egg basket.

I have a few Australorps and they lay brown eggs, winter is just ending and they laid the whole winter, you could try these breeds. They are really good. They've stayed darker brown the whole time!

I like this breed for its looks, and for the challenge of breeding to get the dark eggs while maintaining body type. But I don't find mine very friendly either. That's ok, they aren't meant to be pets, per se. But I had to get rid of a beautiful roo when he kept attacking my wife. That cock was tough as nails. Even survived a black lab attack, which killed off the other chickens.

Hi Lisa- I'm surprised (and sorry to hear) that your roo is mean. I've heard a few times they can be mean, but usually you hear much more how sweet, docile and lovable this breed of roos are- do you know his lineage? We purchased two BCM roos with hens back in Jan, and even though they had minimal handling previous to us, they are both sweethearts, and docile gentlemen that dote on their hens. We can pick up, hold and stroke both these guys and have them relax and close their eyes. Does he only have the two hens? This can make a big difference for them.

None of my Marans roosters have ever been aggressive. My Marans are calm and laid back, though they aren't friendly. They're somewhat aloof with me.

I love my Marans,, I find them to be friendly, curious and very broody. Mine are great moms and tolerate me very well. I have not had good luck with Black Copper roos, I killed mine because he was mean, I have a Blue Copper that is a year and so far has not flogged anyone. i have 14 babies right now and hope I get a nice Black Copper roo from them My Marans are good talkers and seem to enjoy my company.

If you never owned one...why would you even dare to post a review? Darn...What they say about a wooden goose.

I have a beautiful Marans cock, Mr. Darcy and a sweet pullet, Miss Lizzy. He is a true gentleman, a little wimpy because I have a very mean Americauna cock (Leroy Brown) who makes sure everybody knows he's the boss. Mr Darcy is content to play second fiddle and is kind and sweet to everybody. Miss Lizzy, at nearly 7 months, has not started laying yet. I can't wait until that first chocolate egg shows up!

I just got a couple Maran pullets and a couple BO pullets. They are all so cute. Now my flock is complete. LOL My husband just put his foot down. LOL I can't say that I made any promises though . :)

I love my marans as well. My roo is fabulous - takes great care of the girls, is very easy to handle, and looks absolutely gorgeous! We get nice big milk-chocolate eggs - not quite as productive as some of my other chickens, but steady and reliable.

Our Maran roo, Mr. M, is the cream of the crop, the roo at the top and is very protective of his girls, as he regally leads them on their daily rounds of the best restaurants in "town". First stop, the back 9, to look for grubs, get a little sun, and enjoy the beauty of the woods. Later in the day, they make a stop at Compost Grille, before ending the day at the all-you-can-eat buffet on Kale Row.

Even though we have other, lesser roos, our Maran is King and he knows it!

I get eggs from my Black Marans every day, but they are young and just started laying. I do have some other Marans, but these eggs are a VERY dark brown. Some even have some very small litter brown spots. Little kids love the colours of all the eggs from my heritage hens. They look like an Easter Basket!

I love the French Black Copper Marrans! I wish I could find some at a reasonable price, as my rooster died over the Winter (old age) and am looking for another broody hen here in CT. But I understand how you might think them aloff. There are a lot heppier breeds out there, especially for kids.

My Marans are as friendly as the rest of my girls. It just depends on me; how much time I spend lovin' em up! They jump into my lap begging for treats, vocaling their desire, just as frequently as the others. One of my girls was laying a small egg that was not dark and as all Marans was a real pig at the trough so I sold her. The ones I kept are laying very dark eggs, so whereas they are not thriffy where the feed is concerned, I am happy with them.

Something else. I heard that because their egg shells are thicker it was harder for the chicks to get out on hatch day. I found this not to be true. In a hatch of 40 some odd eggs of various breeds, all the Marans hatched. Also in subsequent hatches. They are a tough chicken!
