Frizzle feathered fowl can be traced as far back as the 1600, from Africa to the Philippines. British/ Australian and New Zealand standard of perfection described Frizzles as a heavy breed of their own. The breed is described as having a single comb, clean legged, the size of a Plymouth Rock. They come in large fowl and bantams. In addition, Frizzles can also be a version of any recognised breed, such as frizzled Japanese, frizzled Cochin, etc...

Great Birds
Pros: Super sweet, cool to look at
Cons: None
I love my Frizzle Easter Egger! Our broody hen hatched 3 frizzles in her brood earlier this Summer, and they're all beautiful to look at. Frizzles have such unique feathers. Two of them were boys, but they were the sweetest chicks and don't mind being held. The girl, Marigold hasn't started laying yet but she is very friendly. I highly recommend this breed.

Pros: Sweet, loves to be talked to and will respond back. Very docile. Feathers are super soft.
I highly recommend this breed, especially the Bantam if you want a pet and a brood hen.

I have a black bantam Frizzle hen. She is the most docile hen that we have ever had. Her feathers are super soft. I call her Doodle Bug.

She comes when I call her name. The only one that does.
Pros: Unique and adorable looking. Sweet, soft personality, often shy.
Cons: They seem a bit more vulnerable (due to their quiet/shyness?)
I've had experience with a few frizzles, and have felt the same way about each of them. I love them! They are so sweet and shy...they seem to almost prefer isolate themselves (rather than fight into pecking order).

They are quiet, too (which further leads into my shyness description) Even my frizzle rooster sounds gentle when he crows. The hens love him. I love him. And he's great at returning all that love.

I really appreciate their uniqueness...The soft curls of their fluffy feathers... they win the very cutest chicken award, in my opinion!

You got your self some curlys! Breed frizzle to frizzle and get curly. Require more heat than others and when breeding 1 curly to a smooth you will get 100% frizzles!

thought this is called a Frazzle? Frizzle to frizzle=Frazzle,a horrible condition resulting in broken and painful feathers? This is just what Ive read would love to be told for sure about the genetics just (hopefully) got some sizzles!

They are called Curlies in other countries or other forums, (not sure of the extent, haha) and Frazzles here.
Personally I'm a little confused by there being "frizzles" as a breed considering they're a feather type, not a breed. Yes hatcheries just sell Cochin mutts, but, my frizzles certainly aren't.

I am thinking that frizzles are a trait that nay chicken breed can inherit if bred to a bird with the frizzle gene. In other words they are not a breed but a characteristic. It is interesting to hear about the results of the curled feathers. I would never have thought of it on my own.

Well if you have a flat feathered frizzle that carries the gene about 25% of the chicks will be frizzled.

each chicken is different, breeds like cochin, that have a good reputation, can be MEAN! Dont give up on a breed just because you have had 1 bad experince, We have one right now that is so sweet, We have an Old English that squawks when you pick him up but otherwise he is sweet, dont give up on frizzles!!

I have 7 bantam frizzles and I LOVE them. They are great mothers and will sit several times a year (or at least mine have). The rooster is very protective of the hens and they are very mild mannered. They are also very adorable :). I have a few double frizzles (which resulted from 2 frizzled parents) and they are a little smaller than the others. I think this is a result of double frizzle genes.

Congrats on your new chick. Chickens are very social animals and need companionship with their own kind. PLEASE get another chick to keep your one chick happy and healthy!!

Hello! I don't know much about Frizzles but I do have Salmon Faverolles. In my experience, they have been the nicest and most easy going chickens. They are the only chickens I have that I've never seen peck or chase another chicken, even ones that I've introduced into the flock. They seem to be accepting of other chickens immediately and aren't aggressive at all. Not sure if all Faverolles are this way, but mine are.

My 2 ducks and older 2 hens were in the brooder together and shared a coop for awhile. They get along great(all 4 are different breeds).
My salmon fave is the most mellow easy going thing, though when I tried to introduce the new babies she did attack, but then 2 days later she was back to being miss broody butt Bella(her third time since November).
That said....one of the babies, a buff cochin frizzle bantam is currently in the nest with miss Bella after it got scared in the rain, and she's letting it hide under her wing(it's a little to big to actually fit under her).
