    The Moonshiner's Leghorns

Today is Day 21 for the 2 remaining eggs from that 5 year old cuckoo/barred Leghorn that I bought at the poultry show in 2020. I've been trying for some chicks from her all summer. This morning I woke up to the power out again, the incubator at room temperature, and condensation all over the...

    The Moonshiner's Leghorns

I'm not worried about varmints. I'm worried about small pets. Murphy's Law happens.

    The Moonshiner's Leghorns

Agreed, unless you have a small dog or cat that might decide to go into the trap to get the moon pie. Your avatar shows a small dog.

Chocolate is toxic to some animals. My bird used to like the yellowish colored ones, possibly banana?

    The Moonshiner's Leghorns

I used to have a Nanday conure who loved moon pies. He liked Cheerios cereal, too. He would put a toe through the hole in the center then bring his foot up and eat it off his toe.

And whenever you get some eggs from the barred ones, don't forget me! :D (Hey, I'm not above begging.)

    The Moonshiner's Leghorns

I just candled, and two of the eggs that were under the broody look like they're about 6-7 days along.

    The Moonshiner's Leghorns

Well, the crazy broody hen has changed her mind. She is not sitting on the eggs any more and had one for breakfast. Any eggs that showed any signs of life are now in the incubator.

Nice! He looks just like one of mine--the father of the 5 chicks and fertilizer of all those eggs the broody is hoarding. They could be twins, except mine does not have any brown.

    The Moonshiner's Leghorns

They're barred Leghorns that I got from Sand Hill. By nicest I mean the closest to the SOP out of the birds that I got in that batch. They are not show quality by any means, but I have been comparing them to the SOP to try to get as close as possible. All I can do is my best with what I have...

    The Moonshiner's Leghorns

OK, I'm in serious need of some advice. The nicest of the girls that I got from Sand Hill last year decided to go broody. I have more eggs than I can use and decided to let her have at it, figuring the mood would pass in a day or so. Nope. It's been nearly a week, and she has accumulated...

Those are some nice looking birds.

Some of us remember when things were only done via mail and landlines, but I agree, using computers would probably be helpful.

    The Moonshiner's Leghorns

That's the impression I got, but I didn't want to get any rumors started. It was a few years ago, and he's still in business and raising lots of chicks. It might have been just a bad day.

    The Moonshiner's Leghorns

When I talked to them over the phone a year or two ago, it sounded like he was exhausted and mentioned being older. Well, I'm a few years older than he is. :). Somebody has to keep the uncommon breeds and types going.

    The Moonshiner's Leghorns

I do the same. There are 5 chicks in the brooder right now, all large, lively, and feisty. Praying they are not 5 cockerels.... That business with the gnats bothers me. Why only the brown colored Leghorns?

    The Moonshiner's Leghorns

I saw some buff Leghorns advertised on line as Dutch Leghorns. Are those the same type?

    The Moonshiner's Leghorns

LOL, I'll name them anything you like! The one in the big coop is fairly decent, but has a few all white feathers. He is called Mr. Grumbles because he growls all the time. He's also pretty hard on the girls, so as soon as I get a better one, he will go to freezer camp.

    The Moonshiner's Leghorns

Please do help with the numbers! Right now I have five eggs in the incubator from the 5 year old hen that I got at the show (wish me luck) because she's the best one I have. She still lays some, but not like she used to. I'm working on legs, most of the ones I got from Sand Hill have white...
