Broke an egg this morning and was surprised to see what looks like a fertile yolk, but I'm not an expert. I'd very much like some opinions, my cockerel is only 4 months old, just started crowing a couple of weeks ago. The hen who laid this egg is nearly twice his size.
So hard to get a good...
I'm in SC too. We were lucky not to lose power, I know a lot of people who did. We got a lot of downed trees and branches, but nothing hit the house or power lines in our neighborhood.
I just set 12 more eggs, adding to my first batch of now 14 eggs(out of 17, 3 were not fertile- all from the same hen. Has since been laying fertile). There are 26 eggs in my coolerbator, due a week apart. This is my first staggered hatch and my plan is that after the first set hatch I'll take...
Update on my eggs~
Day 8, Of my 17 eggs 3 were not fertile, one looks iffy so I left it Annnnd... I dropped one. It cracked but the membrane is still intact. Sealed it with wax and hpoing for the best. Baby was still squirming around, so I'll check it again in a few days.
Also, I set 12...
I'm sure they're fine. You did a good job.
Mind if I ask, How does staggering your hatches work out if you add them all the time? Do you have a separate hatcher that you can clean in between hatches?
Its so hard to not candle them. My second batch is on day 6. I need to keep myself busy cuz every time I look at that box I think "Well maybe just a peek...." And then I yell at myself! Haha
How far along are they? Eggs are pretty good at surviving a drop in temps. My broody hatched 3 babies this past week, she got off her nest 1-2 times a day in 30° weather. If they are starting to generate their own heat (the last week or so) they have even better odds. You should probably get...
Do you have anywhere else you can put the bator? It could be the dampness from the bathroom. I have had mine in a closet and that worked really well. It was a utility closet, with an outlet. If adding the towel doesn't work, I think you should try that next. Most of the moisture is probably...
Where does it stay without adding any water? Anything between 20 and 40% is OK. It its too high, add a dry washcloth or paper towel to absorb the extra moisture, if its low add a moist one. Imo, its better to stay on the low side and add extra humidity later during lockdown.
I know I'm late but does anyone kind if I join in?
I also set my largest batch ever this morning. A whopping 17 eggs im my home made coolerbator! :D
Buff orpingtons from my own flock. :)
Make those changes to your thermostat that I suggested, it will be so much more accurate and you'll get much better results. It has to be within 2 inches and the metal side facing the heat source!
My third chick hatched and I snuck her under broody when she was eating. They are doing very well...
I've never done a staggered hatch, but have thought about doing it a number of times. My thinking is that it would be best to add a second set as soon as possible. The most important time to turn eggs in in the first week. So its better to stop turning early, when the first batch goes into lock...
