    Chukars

Thanks for replying. What you say makes great sense. I think I will need to scale back my chukars because I raise enough chickens as is.

    Chukars

I'm really not for sure. I fed the chicken feed because that was what I had and game bird feed is much more expensive around here. I wouldn't think that it would make such a big difference in flavor. The chukars taste like some bantam chickens I processed last year and have about the same amount...

    Chukars

I raised 51 chukars from chicks to 17 weeks on 18% chicken feed. We processed 10 the other day, some we plucked, some we skinned. Let them set in the refrigerator for two days. We fried some, roasted the others. My question is this, do all chukars taste like chicken, because the ones we have...

Good (and cheap) alternative to wood shavings?

Just a suggestion, but I contacted my local high school wood shop and asked what the did with their saw dust and shavings. Now I pick up, on average, two big garbage bags per week. Works great for me.

    Questions about Muscovies

Quote: Yes, they are good about staying put, esp. after clipping their wings. Just be careful, it has been said that "Muscovy's feel their purpose in life is to populate the world."

    Questions about Muscovies

We have raised both Muscovy ducks (for three years) and other varieties, runners, buffs, and Cayuga's. This past year we increased our Muscovy hens from three to five and have hatched well over 150 ducklings, even after losing hatches to late snows. We raised out over 100 ourselves for meat...

    best breed for a newbie?

The Coturnix would be my choice to begin with. Mine are very calm and are prolific layers. They don't jump out of the cage whenever I open it (Bobs and Valley's, oh my!). The reason you will be covered up is that they are very easy to hatch (my opinion). They grow very quickly. You add these up...

I processed my extra roos today!GRAPHIC DESCRIPTION GRAPHIC DINNER PIC

I'm interested, sounds yum! I processing a bunch of roosters the other day and after skinning them (with feathers on) I cut the breast fillets off and the leg-thigh quarters. 15 quail made a nice pile of meat. We froze the meat, but I was thinking a cashew chicken except substituting the quail.

Tom just not "accomplishing" his task

I don't know if this is normal, but my BR tom makes puckering noises in his butt when he's done with a hen.

    Muscovy and Pilgrims together

Sorry, I needed to be more clear! I was wondering if the geese would try to mess with the Muscovy nests or vice versa. Would the Muscovy's go after the gosling's, that is what I was meaning. My group gets along fine, I just want to avoid issues when the girls start setting or when ducks or geese...

    Muscovy and Pilgrims together

I have been running a breeding pair of Pilgrim geese with my Muscovy's and I'm wondering if anyone else has run geese and Muscovy's together during the broody season?

    Question about Bobwhites.

Thanks, I not a real believer in luck, but the more I watch these crazy birds, the more I think I'm going to need it.

Anyone raise meaties in an urban/suburban setting?

I have a 10X8 tractor that I raise meaties, ducks, turkeys, etc. in. I can put 25 meaties in it and I move it once a day. It is a similar set-up to Joel Saladin at Polyface Farms. I also live in town on 3/4 of an acre with garage and several outbuildings. By moving it everyday the manure didn't...

    Question about Bobwhites.

Well, I bit the bullet and purchased some Northern Bobwhite stock. They weigh between 8-10 ounces each and they seem to be well taken care of. They came out of a flight pen and are spastic to say the least. I put them in a 24X24X14 cage with a wire bottom and they they haven't killed...

    Question about Bobwhites.

Thanks folks, this is the same conclusion I had come too. Better to get adults and start breeding up from there.

    Question about Bobwhites.

Would it be better to purchase adult bobwhite quail from flight pens (have several that sell in my area) to begin raising them or buy hatching eggs? I can see some pros and cons to both. I guess the bottom line is this: is there a huge difference in size, enough to justify buying hatching eggs?

What do you all do with Quail?

I started with Coturnix in late November. I purchased 44 birds total: some browns, whites, golden's, tuxedo's, and one Tibetan. We have culled down to 20 breeders. The culled ones were skinned and the breast meat and leg-thigh quarters were kept. We baked some of these, they were good. We deep...

Is It true that Turkey Chicks are Hard to Raise?

We have had a much better return on our BBW's than Bourbon Red's. We raised 6 out of 6 BBW's and they were delicious! The Red's...well, we raised 4 adults out of 12. Four died within 6 weeks of hatch. One lay down and died at 15 weeks while a couple days later another got her head stuck in the...
