Second surgery went well. The whole coop (26 chickens) is full of hay and we have her in a separate area, separated with chicken wire with all the hay out of her area.
Still not out of the woods, but no reason to believe a problem exists.
Is your girls crop just saggy or is it full? If it...
plus,
Our girl is eating hay again and not eating well again. We are going to do surgery again tomorrow night. We will cut in a different spot because there will be scar tissue and may be a little lumpy. The first incision is almost healed, might as well let it finish and start with a fresh...
We just did a crop surgery a week ago and pulled out a bunch of hay. She was doing great until we put hay in her area and now her crop is full of hay again. Surgery again tomorrow, but how can we stop her from eating hay? she won't live long with crop surgery every week.
Is she maybe missing...
I am not a vet, nor do I want to undermine his/her decision to give antibiotics, but I think that plain unsweetened yogurt with active cultures such as Dannon would help her crop and digestion. Antibiotics, I think destroy the good bacteria.
What did the x-ray reveal?
I don't know if the scales will grow back. I never heard of red leg, but I read last night that mites enter the skin through the feather folicle and party in tunnels under the skin. That would explain why it looks red and swollen. i sprayed with permetherin today. will keep you updated.
Pickaduck,
Thanks for your reply.
This photo was taken immediately after cleaning and soaking. The grease from the bag balm and antibiotic ointment has trapped the dirt in his feathers and they are still all greasy. We are trying to get them trimmed off, but I'm afraid to cut them too close...
I would give yoghurt and hope it comes out. We did our surgery on Monday and it does seem like there is a little swelling, which I think is normal. I would give it time unless she is still not eating or pooping. Hope it works out. Keep us posted.
just inherited a feather legged roo. Came with scaley leg mites and chicken lice. treated legs and feet with bag balm and body with DE as well as bathing in dawn and vinegar for about a month. parasites seem to be gone.
He is isolated from our flock.
We have been putting tripple antibiotic...
Thanks to every body on the BYC for all the great information. Because of the people on the BYC my wife and I were able to successfully perform our first crop surgery last night. It went very well and she is doing fine this morning. Shes drinking water/antibiotics and eating yogurt. Once again...
