18 month old hen with very swollen spot below vent

Hey fellow BYC'rs! I need some advice. I have an 18 month old Barred Rock hen who has been laying steady and acting normal. Still is. But today when she was ranging I noticed that below her vent she had a very large bulge and all the feathers were spread out there from the pressure. I...

    Balding Chick--Worry?

Hey BYC'rs! I have 9 chicks of different breeds that were hatched on October 5th. All are doing great. But one is looking mighty ugly. It is a black sexlink and she has bare skin all around her neck, and bare skin on her back where her wings rest. She has looked like this since day one...

Hey fellow BYC'rs! I found a child's playhouse on Craigslist and naturally saw it as my future coop.. It has thermal windows and siding. My gals are in it now and laying great. Thought I would share some pics and see if you had any suggestions to make it better. Thanks for all input!

Hens not eating since the move...

Hey BYC'rs! Got another questions for you to help me with. I built a new coop across the run from the old coop, maybe 8 feet away. I closed off the old coop and moved my hens into the new coop Sunday night. At first they all piled up at the closed off door of the old coop at dusk and just...

    Husband vs Wife :)

Food and water outside only IMO. When they are in the coop at night they can't see anyway and are sleeping. Keeps the mess down also...no spills, etc. Lonely rooster? I am not allowed to have them where I live, but my guess is no. He wouldn't be lonely. Pet or dinner?....hmmm, my hubby...

Question! 7 month old hen is spraying clear waterlike stuff instead of poo.

Her crop is still hard this morning, so I am going to buy some mineral oil like it says in the link that was posted and try that. They got a lot of greens, grapes, and even a pork chop a few days ago and they are maybe not used to that and it caused the impaction. Wish me luck and I will keep...

Question! 7 month old hen is spraying clear waterlike stuff instead of poo.

Okay. In the morning when I go out to fill the water and food I will take a closer look. I know now what you are talking about because there have been times that a few of them definitely looked lopsided....lol Thank you so much and I will let you know what I find in the morning.

Question! 7 month old hen is spraying clear waterlike stuff instead of poo.

How do I check her crop? I know where it is....in front in the breast area. But what do I do? Push and squeeze? And what do I look for? Thanks!

Question! 7 month old hen is spraying clear waterlike stuff instead of poo.

Hey BYC'rs! I have a 7 month old Barred Rock hen that is spraying a clear waterlike substance instead of poo. I mean it literally shoots/sprays from her vent like a quick blasting wateerfall. She is still laying and eating fine. Not lethargic. She has a streak of junk below her vent that is...

26 week old pullets--half are laying, okay to switch feed?

Well since my last post about mixing the feeds, 5 of my 7 girls are now laying I have since added a separate bowl of grit since they love to eat green stuff for treats and a bowl of crushed oyster shell in case they need it. Can I just say how dang YUMMY my girls' eggs are?? This is awesome...
