Valentino's Journey
So, one of our 3 Rhode Island Red hens ended up being a rooster. THis became an issue because we can't keep them where we live. I started a mad scramble to post online everywhere and the call and email farms and 4h groups to try to find this guy a home. A co-worker of my...
Coop Plans
Note: I made plans for the build months ago. Once I started connecting the wall panels I realized a large mistake. I had not included the fact that some of the walls would be covered by chicken wire in my calculations. THis has caused the coop itself to not be a 4 ft x 4 ft square...
Belton Coop
We built this 8x8 run and 4x4 coop for 3 Rhode Island Reds, 1 Buff Orphington and 1 Barred Rock. We built it over an outdoor carpet than was once home to a pool and used construction grade sand as our surface. In the coop are 2 roosts, hanging food and water (stays cleaner) and...
OK, "panther" is a catagory not a breed. The only panther in the america's is the jaguar. It has a black phase but that picture isn't a jag. The body structure isn't right. The cougar isn't a panther, despite what people in florida call it. It is felis concolor, meaning cat of one color. Cougar...
I moved the food and water out and locked everyone out in the yard for most of the day. The kids would rotate them through having access to the coop and nest boxes. After a couple of days, the idea of sharing dawned on them, mostly.
We had a very bad storm suprise us last night. If you have seen my coop page you can see that we have two coop access doors, a screen one and a wood one to cover the scree. Snince it was warm we left the screen exposed, as normal. I surprise storm blew through at 1 am. 70 mph winds and massive...
OK so sometime this morning or last night Katie layed an egg. THis also came out of one end of the chicken. Wife examined it and said its a lot like the stuff that holds a jello egg together. Thinking maybe this may have been part of the issue as well, seeing as this was her first egg in several...
Update. Well over night I got some good news, I think. The crop is a little softer and she pooped, a lot. Going to continue with the olive oil and yogurt today. Should I be adding a vitamin into her water since we are withholding food? And does anyone think that possibly offering a bit of grit...
Ok. so a new question. How do you get the dropper of olive oil into a chickens mouth? she is resisting and i dont want to accidentally break anything. For now she is inside and we mixed some olive oil in with some plain yogurt, based off the recommendations from several links. We'll see what...
Today I noticed that this chicken has a unusually large breast area. I was examining her and the "growth" is as hard as a rock and she has lost a few feathers on the underside of it.
This feels like it is outside of the breast bone. I hope this is just something weird, of all the chickens...
So our broody barred rock got a forced free range timeout. She didn't handle it well. She ran off our weiner dog mix and then ran across the yard and pecked our gordon setter on the nose. Both dogs head for the back door. Never thought a chicken would run off a 50 lb dog.
Ours were handled a lot when they were little so they are pretty used to us. To get them to eat out of our hand we have to walk out the back door. They go nuts as soon as we walk outside. Although getting them to follow us around the backyard with a green picnic plate is almost more fun.
our small weiner dog mix had to learn the hard way by getting her butt kicked a few times by the chickens. I think the last incident we had from her was when we saw our RIR walking around witha bit of dog fur in her beak and the dog sitting on the back porch begging to come inside. Our gordon...
