My BYC page I live in the suburbs north of Orlando, Florida with my husband of 13 years and two daughters, ages 12 and 9. We got our first flock of 4 chickens in April of 2010. They live in a homemade coop and run built by my husband in the backyard. The chickens are an Easter Egger, a...

    When will my hen lay?

I have a Buff Orpington who is 8 months old and still not laying. She just started squatting and turned really red in the face about a week or two ago, so I figure she'll probably start by Christmas. Sounds like orpingtons can be late in maturing.

Who else is waiting the impossible wait?

My 12 year old daughter started this thread back in July while waiting for our four pullets (born in April) to start laying. One started in September, and she was our only chicken laying until the end of November when our Wyandotte started. Now the other two, an 8-month old Buff Orpington and...

Seriously, 30 weeks and no eggs?

I have a 34 week old Wyandotte who laid her first egg last week, and a 31 week old Easter Egger and 34 week old Buff Orpington who just started squatting this week. I was certain that they would all wait until the days start getting longer again before they started. I'm thinking the BO and EE...

3 squats today. Who will be first? Egg 3 from Lily new pics

I can't really guess who will be first, since, in my experience, the reddest and biggest comb doesn't always determine who will lay first. Are any of them going in and out of your henhouse throughout the day and digging little nests? The squatting combined with the perpetual nest-making...

First egg from a 34 week old!

I found an egg laying in the dirt of our chicken yard a little while ago. I'm pretty sure it came from our Wyandotte, who is 34 weeks and has looked ready to lay for weeks and weeks! I saw her in the nest box yesterday. She, of course, ran out as soon as she saw me. Then about an hour ago...

Why didn't I know about this before I got my chickens...

I read up on chickens before we got our four girls this spring, and maybe I didn't remember reading about the shorter days slowing down their egg production, but I have 3 who are 7 1/2 months and still haven't laid a first egg, and one who started laying in September, stopped at the end of...

Seriously, 30 weeks and no eggs?

You aren't alone! We have two 30 week old pullets( BO and Wyandotte) that haven't laid a first egg yet, a 27-28 week old EE that hasn't started laying yet, and a 30 week old that was laying 5-6 eggs a week since she was 22 weeks, but quit last Thursday. So.... no eggs for us! BTW, woodmort...

used last egg today...3 haven't started laying and one's broody?

I have 4 chickens, ages 28-30 weeks, and only one is laying. Now she seems like she is kinda broody? She was sitting in her nest box all day Thursday and would puff up her feathers and shriek if we approached her. She did lay an egg that day though. We removed her from her next box a couple...

    I thought chickens loved pumpkins?

I guess chickens have their own preferences. We gave our hens their first taste of pumpkin guts today when we carved our jack-o-lanterns, and they really seemed to like it. I have found though, that they are a little apprehensive with a new food when it's offered the first time, then they...

    Only one busy girl

I can sympathize. We have 4 chickens and only one has been laying for over 6 weeks now. I don't get why the others haven't kicked in yet. They are 27 and 29 weeks old! Our one layer hasn't even slowed down with the shorter days, still giving us 5-6 eggs a week.

Must be crazy, dreaming about my chickens...

I'm waiting for 3 of my 4 chickens to start laying eggs. They are 26-28 weeks old. The past several nights, I've had dreams about them laying eggs. Last night, I had a dream that my BO laid her first egg and it was the size of an ostrich egg! Anyone else dream about their chickens...

    I am soooo done....

I have 2 that are 28 weeks and not laying (a wyandotte and a buff orpington) and a 26 week old EE also not laying. Only one of my four girls is, and has been for 6 weeks! It is very hard to patient, especially when family and friends keep asking when they're going to get some eggs:/

How long between YOUR chicken's first squat and first egg?

First squat, then 6 days later, first egg:)

    Delayed egg song?

Princess Chicken, I too have just one chicken laying out of my flock of four, isn't it frustrating? I've been telling all of our friends and family that come fall, I'd have eggs to share. As it is now, we get 5 or 6 a week and have to ration them for ourselves... I refuse to buy store bought...

    Sleeping in Nest Boxes

I have a bullied EE that sleeps in a nest box every night to get away from the other hens. They never did accept her into the flock completely and I feel sorry for her, so I just scoop the poop out of that box every morning:)

Really?!? 28 weeks old, not laying

Really?!? 28 weeks old, not laying

My wyandotte has a really red face too with big, floppy wattles. She is also huge. Looking at her you would assume she is already laying, but she doesn't squat for anyone or sing. The buff orpington still has a fairly small and light comb, but she too is huge. They both are spending more...

    Egg wait anyone???

I only have 1 of my 4 chickens laying. They are all about 26-28 weeks old. My wyandotte has a red face and floppy wattles and my EE's comb is getting bigger and redder. My buff orpington still has a small, light pink comb:( None of the three are squatting or singing an egg song. The only...
