    Barn yard mix gender questions

I have this mix of birds that I hope are all hens but would love any input. They are between 4-6 months old. No eggs yet and I think I have heard crowing but it could be a neighbor's bird. I am really thinking the black and white bird is a boy, it is the only one with a different tail. The...

    Broody Hen Thread!

I have a 9 month Cochin that is broody for the first time. I'm not sure if she is a standard or banty but I think banty. Anyways, she has been sitting on an empty nest for 2.5 -3 weeks. I thought she would just stop because she didn't seem very dedicated at first. She would get up and eat/drink...

    Raising Meat Rabbits

This is a bit jumbled but if you can make it through it hopefully has lots of helpful info/tips for people new to rabbits. I think it was the mom, could have been a vitamin deficiency, confused about what those "little things" were or maybe it was stress from moving and having new people...

    help with gender and breed?

I have this group of birds that are about 19 weeks old now. I know I have heard early crowing sounds but can't pinpoint who it is yet. Here is a link to the pictures of them at 3 weeks old if interested. Do I need to worry about anyone laying withing the next few weeks? I don't have their nest...

Extra treat/feed for Chickens - Dubia roach nymphs?

I feed off any extra males to my chickens. They do fine with the larger roaches but just in case I put them in a sealed container in the freezer for about an hour. Just to make sure the chickens can catch them.

    FERMENTED FEEDS...anyone using them?

I have been trying to keep up on this thread but I'm sure I have missed a few posts so I am sorry if this has been covered. Is it ok to feed FF that has had fly's in it? I know chickens eat bugs but for some reason this does not seam ok. I came home and found a few circling the bucket and some...

    Can chickens eat fish bones?

I had a 2 gallon bucket full of random old bait fish, squid that was caught up in the cast net, and shrimp. I put it in the oven until it was just cooked and flaky. I swear it was all gone before I got back in the house. So yes they will eat the bones and every other bit you put out there.

Chicken hoped fence, scared like crazy. Will she do it again?

I let my 4 girls out to roam the yard today, I let them out about 2 days a week. They do put themselves away at night. Today I went to check on them and couldn't find one. Searched for awhile then the dogs let me know where she was. She hopped the fence (4 foot tall) and was just hiding on the...

    feeding bones

I feed my chickens bones. They eat all the bones when we have chicken for dinner and when we have beef or pork they clean the bones then the dogs get the leftovers when I move the tractor. Last week I made pulled pork in the crock pot and the bones were a bit soft, the chickens loved them. They...

    FERMENTED FEEDS...anyone using them?

I have been fermenting my adult and chick food for about 2 weeks now. all was going well then I got a water filtration system by rain soft put on the house. I added some water to the buckets and now 2 days later there is a white film on top of the bucket. It's kind of foamy but shows no other...

    is this feathered out enough?

I've got a question if you can help, in your first picture what breed is the bottom bird? Also does it's feathers feel like velvet? I have one that looks exactly like that one except I'm sure mine is a roo as his comb is much larger at only 4 weeks old. Thanks!

    Feeding chickens wet feed?

I was feeding FF a few months ago and it stunk the house up to much so hubby vetoed it. Then my girls would not eat just dry feed so I added water and they go crazy for it. I just fill their bowl with dry pellets, cover with water and a tsp of acv with mother and stir. Wait about 3 hours and add...

One chicken not laying. same age and breed.

I have four white leghorns that are between 6-7 months old. When I got them at about 4 months old they were all the same size and had smaller dark pink combs. Three of them have been laying for a month and a half, the other is still not ready. Her comb looks a little bigger and red but still...

mix of chicks to identify if you could. Breed and gender if possible.

This group of chicks is what happens when you take kids with you TSC. I know two of them are Easter eggers, but the rest I'm slightly clueless. I bought them 2 weeks ago Saturday, guessing they are between 2-3 weeks old. Larger EE. Named stripes. His feet are light brown like the second pic...

Can chickens drink from gerbil/hamster water bottle?

I went to tractor supply co and bought the 32 oz. rabbit water bottles. I have 4 white leghorns that are about 4 months old and they go through almost one bottle a day. I also feed fermented feed with a bit of extra water in it so that may cut down on their water intake some. If you go this...

can I have a silkie incubate quail eggs? and a few other questions.

wow, thanks for sharing that. I didn't know that chickens could be a carrier and not show signs themselves. So that is out. I guess I'll not be lazy and go look for an incubator. Now that is answered does anyone have a breed recommendation and numbers?

can I have a silkie incubate quail eggs? and a few other questions.

I know you shouldn't house chickens and quail together but I am wondering if I can get a few silkies to keep for incubating my quail eggs? I thought about just keeping some fertile quail eggs on hand until the silkies go broody, then just let them hatch those. If this would work how long could I...

Feeding a herding dog a raw food diet...

I was worried about this as well, we raise rabbits for our own meat and the leftovers go to the dogs. Whenever I am out taking care of the rabbits one of my dogs lays at the fence and gives me the "feed me" face. I think my dogs (2 labs and one treeing walker hound) understand that the rabbits...

How to feed chickens without buying feed

I'm not sure if there are black soldier flies where you are but they are a great protein source. Simple to raise and harvest. Also not sure how it would work out but I raise rabbits and when I clean out the hay and manure under the cages there are swarms of crickets, maybe if you make a low...
