We received meds from Peter Brown (drops and ointment) and the swelling has gone down to almost normal. He's keeping his eye open now, but it's all black. It looks as though it's 100% pupil and I am not sure he can see out of it. Very strange. I don't know what happened or what any of it...
Um....my Rooster, Roobert looked fine this morning. Now, this.
I don't know what happened or what to do.
Suggestions?
1) What type of bird , age and weight? Buff Orp, 1 year, 9 lbs.
2) What is the behavior, exactly: No odd behavior. Crowing, eating, acting fine. Eye looks awful.
3) How...
My 1 year old roo has been limping for a few days now with a swollen foot but there's no black spot at all. I know it's infected because it's hot to the touch, but it's kind of the whole pad portion, and not at all on the top. I did slice out what I thought was a small black spot, but nothing...
I totally vote llama because I have one, and he's fantastic. He's rather clean, only uses one spot in the yard for his waste, which can go right onto the garden as fertilizer. Plus no barking and they require far less care than a dog and are much gentler than donkeys. Llamas are naturally...

Thanks! That's what I thought. A chicken - owning friend of mine was horrified that I don't wash them until I use them. She scrubs hers with soap before putting hers in the fridge. Of course, she also won't eat her eggs - she still only eats ones from the store! LOL!!!
I have some conflicting egg advice. I was always told not to wash fresh eggs - just brush them off and put them in the fridge. This was so as not to remove the protective bloom that naturally coats them and keeps out bacteria.
BUT - recently I have heard that you should "Always scrub" your...
I'm jealous! All our local TSC's only carry Red Sex Link and Cornish every year, and they are so inept at it that lots of people end up getting meat birds they never intended to buy. I called all 3 TSC's in driving distance last year to ask what breeds they were selling and got the same...
My chickens sneeze occasionally - they're all over a year old and sometime they sneeze when they are drinking (I think it's because they tend to submerge their beaks and get water in their noses).
In the absence of other symptoms I wouldn't worry too much.
I nearly killed myself with...
WOW. I feel your pain!
I do have a Cochin/Brahma mix roo that didn't start crowing until he was almost ten months old. AT 5 months he didn't even have pointy hackle or saddle feathers yet, and he never developed much of a comb or waddle.
Sorry! Stealthy roos are a real pain!!!!
Aw! He looks just like my blue cochin roo, Clem. I also have a golden cochin roo that we swore was a pullet until he started crowing at 10 months. Unfortunately once that testosterone hit my sweet little "hen" that I used to carry around like a lapdog became a bitey little (well, big) jerk...
Japanese Beetles are a favorite, as is cooked rice mixed with cod liver oil. The Vitamin A is fantastic for them and they loooooove it! Also, scrambled eggs!
Not sure it's the same thing, but I had a girl who got pecked in the eye by another girl and it got all watery and half - closed and "sunken" looking for about a month. I kept her on duramycin just in case and it healed on its own. She's perfectly normal now.
Hope that's all it is for you as well!
