I looked through, and while I didn't read all of the thread (wow!), I was wondering when I can put the broody hen and the three baby chicks she adopted outside with the other hens. They are now two weeks old and the highs are in the 70s and 80s. I would still put them in at night. Thank you...
Yes, she did accept them! She is being a sweet little protective momma to them! I watched carefully to make sure she would take them. I had plans to intervene and keep them in a brooder by themselves, if she did not.
I put my hen that's been broody for two weeks into a large, 54 gallon tote and gave her 4 babies from the feed store. After they are settled, I'd like to move them to a larger brooding area. When do you think it would be safe to move them without upsetting the momma? Thank you!
Update:
The chicks stayed in the heated brooder over night while "Momma" stayed in her flower pot. As usual, I took her out of her pot this morning so she would eat, drink, and poop. However, this morning, she just sat in one spot and wouldn't move. I picked her up and put her in the brooder...
I have an Australorp hen that has been broody for about two weeks. I got some baby chicks from the feed store to give to her, as she has been such a dedicated little momma to her eggs. However, she chose a large flower pot to brood in, and now I'm trying to figure out how to introduce the...
I saw where someone suggested gently massaging the chicken starting at the stomach area and moving backward to the vent area to help work it out. I also saw this:
I had one two days ago that was egg bound, but I didn't have the energy to deal with her, so I locked her up overnight. When I went...
Hi, all you chicken experts. Since I'm new to this, I was hoping on getting some advice specific to my situation. I have a Wyandotte that has had a swollen/slow crop for almost two weeks. I have tried:
isolating her with soaked food with oil for one day
isolating her with no food
ACV in the...
I have a nice-sized coop that my 7 20-week-old chickens sleep in at night. They free roam during the day. They have always been great about heading to the coop right at dusk, but the last few nights, one, two, or more have been roosting on some PVC piping I have above my garden area. They...
My 7 20-week-old chickens were all huddling together on the floor of the coop at the beginning of the night up until about a week or two ago. Now 3 or 4 still huddle together, but the others are starting to roost. And one sometimes sleeps in the nesting boxes. But by the morning, they are all...
I'm pretty new to raising chickens, but I have 3 Australorps and 4 Wyanndottes. The Australorps get to be pretty large (mine are 20 weeks old) and if I am looking at it correctly, it looks like there's only one perch. They would need more area to roost at night, in my opinion.
Any other...
