Yeah! Thinking about it, it's nice that there is a low-cost option. I just didn't know what it really was, you know? My OP was written in the midst of frustration, as it's getting dark and I have no safe place for my chickens... fix one thing and something else falls apart... Surely you can...
I guess these coops serve a purpose as a low-cost option. It's not great, but it did the job for a bit... kind of like the Ikea of chicken coops, eh? I guess I was just under the impression it would last longer than it did!
I like the idea of raised nest boxes! And removable poop pans. The CC...
I guess this is more of a venting thread.
My first coop is (read: WAS) a CConly coop. And they are the worst coops in the world! Popsicle stick construction, cheap hardware... I haven't had it for a full year and it's already falling apart! And I mean literally. The door to the nesting box is...
Can anyone identify the breed of this gorgeous little hen? She has the most interesting half-n-half feathers. Yellow skin, standard 3-toes, and no tail. Thanks for any info!!
Thanks :) She only has 4 toes though! So I don't know about silkie... but if she were that would be great! I love silkies!
She does kinda have the cochin posture. All of my cochin chicks died recently... so I'll keep my fingers crossed for cochin!
Picked up this little lady from the feed store today. They told me she was a black sex link, but I know that she's certainly not! Looks like my Australorp, but lower to the ground with feathery feet. Thanks for any info!
I got this little cutie out of a straight run of assorted bantams. Has feathered legs like a cochin. Colored like a penguin! I'm pretty sure it's a cochin, but unsure of the variety? No others were colored like this. Curious... thanks for any answers :)
Thanks for the responses...
Unfortunately, he didn't make it. When I woke up yesterday, he was flat at the bottom of the brooder. I thought he was dead, but he was still breathing. I picked him up and he revived quite quickly, and he was back to where he was the day before. But he wouldn't eat...
I was picking up some chicks today at the feed store when I saw this chick in the brooder of assorted bantams. His head was laying completely on his back. His eyes were closed, but he was peeping away. I asked the people at the feed store what was wrong with him, and they just said "He probably...
Sometimes chicken deaths are just unexplainable. It could have been something she swallowed, or it could have even been genetic. She felt very low energy. She was given to me by a friend, as a pair (male/female) of porcelain d'uccles. So of course, I have the roo left. Isn't that always the way...
I have a 4-week old d'uccle pullet that keeps opening her mouth. Not like panting, more like there is something stuck in her throat. She seems low energy. What could it be? Is there anything I can do?
I was talking to my dear Grandmother the other day, and telling her about my chickens. She asked me what kind of chickens I have.
"Oh, I have silkies, and a marans, I have Polish - "
"What do the Polish ones do, lay sausages?"
I DIED laughing. She's a hot ticket!
Use 1/4" hardware cloth instead of chicken wire. Its much safer for the chickens. And instead of using a staple gun, use screws with washers on them to hold the hardware cloth in place.

Bury the bottom of the frame, or surround with cement blocks to keep out digging predators. A...
I have a polish chick who, on one toe, is missing a talon/nail... not sure what the preferred term is?
I don't know if she was born without it, or had an accident. If she lost it accidentally, it appears to have healed. She walks fine and does not appear to be in pain or discomfort. I'm sure...
