    What were your worst mistakes when you first started?

    I am still a fairly new chicken keeper (1 1/2 years) and I have a mixed flock. Are the layer pellets only for a specific age range? I have seven hens, 6 months to 1.5 years, so not really giving any more chick feed. We also supplement with a cracked corn mix.

    Thanks! I actually filled in most of the coop tonight with a new layer of sand and earth. Next weekend I'm going to scoop out a good 3-4 inches and refill with sand completely. I think it's just too wet and humid for DL in my uncovered run.

    @Blooie thank you! That is all very informative. I am thinking I will start with pine needles and wood chips and go from there. My main concern is with wetness since my run is uncovered, and if there would be any critter issues in the DL.

    Thank you! I do want to raise the ground level a bit as the area does stay wet longer than the rest of my yard. Would DLM be right for me if my run is open and it does get rained on?
