1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I've had chickens before, for several years. I lived in the suburban Colorado plains at the time. It snows, but it generally doesn't stick around. I recently moved to Minneapolis and I have decided to get back into the chicken scene...
Hi everyone,
We have some super coldweather coming up and I was wondering if I should still let my chickens out into the run or keep them in their coop? I have some food in there right now, but I would also add water and some scratch to keep them warm. What do y’all think? Thanks 🐓
This is my first winter with chickens. I have australorps, white rocks, and buff orps. We’ve had a mild winter thus far but next week we are going to get mid 20s. Do I need to do any prep or are my girls good to go? I have a heat lamp if I need it for the coop at night. Is that needed?
My first time owning ducks, one of them decided she would not only put her nest in a spot that I didnt see it, but lay a whole four eggs in it (her first eggs ever)! Its still February and the temputure can get anywhere from 60F to 20F at this point and she made the nest in an odd spot. The...
Hello :) I’m considering giving my aunt some Brahma chicks in the next few months but we live in a pretty temperate climate, and my aunt lives in Maryland which is much colder than South Georgia. I wonder if it would be too cold for them? I’ve never lived in a colder place so I don’t have a good...
I received my small box order from Meyers this morning. I wanted to share how they do it and why I am very comfortable ordering winter chicks.
All 9 chicks arrived healthy, active, very warm and alive.
They were in a small box with a heating pack that covered the bottom then the mat material on...
Hey everyone!
My wife and I acquired 6 heritage turkeys (Narragansett) from a friend, and had to build a quick run/coop for them. Here is what we have....
I know the door is a little fancy, but it is was the cheapest available! We are planning to free range these gobblers once they attribute...
My hens will not go outside of their coop where their food and water is during this snowy and coldweather. I am concerned they will dehydrate or starve to death. Let alone not getting any fresh air or sunshine!
Hi all! It’s my first year with chickens, I got them in spring 2023. We survived the summer but the coming winter & coldweather is new to me. I’ve tried reading some of the threads here on this but haven’t seen much that helps me out. sorry in advance for the long post, any and all advice is...
I have a couple of chickens that I have isolated in a different part of my coop shed and it's gonna be down to 25 tonight and I worry about one of these chickens because she is so small. She's a brown leg horn. She'll be 2 at the end of April. Right now I have her in a crate with Pine bedding...
I have 2 ducklings and just trying to figure out how to take care of them, they are about 6 or 7 weeks old. 1 is a Pekin and the other is a Rouen I think both females. The Pekin is still really skidish and don't understand why. Plus it is getting ready to be really cold and want to know what...
Hi guys..I have two pet ducks and I built them a house inside of my garage..The garage has no heat transfer device and the weather here is around 30F(-1C) and it gets colder and colder when I was checking the weather forecast until 25F so I was wondering if my boys are going to be OK? They have...
When humans get colds and flus we wait it out and it ultimately makes our immune systems more robust, and makes us healthier. Do chickens get seasonal viruses like humans do, that ultimately makes them healthier? Or is everything a death sentence for the flock unless treated with antibiotics...
Its been particularly cold recently, with the lows dropping to 4 degrees (F). I’ve noticed my older emu who’s about 1.5 years old has been acting like he’s cold a lot, he shivers even when he’s lying down and when he walks in the snow I can tell it bothers his feet, what’s the chance of...
Hi..Tonight temperature is gonna dropped to 19F..Should I let my ducks to my apartment? They are currently in my storeroom which has no heat source so I'm a little worried about them..I gave them a blanket and pine shavings as bedding and they seem to enjoy it..So idk should I keep them in...
I have 7 hens. 3 are 3yrs old and the other 4 are 10 months old. I have them all integrated into one run which has two coops. One is large with five roosting boards and 3 nesting boxes. It is well made and warm with enough room for all of them. There are two roosts that aren’t even being used at...
...slowly opening and closing his eyes and breathing with his mouth open as if he was having a hard time breathing. It started when the coldweather came and I think it may be from the cold air. I brought him inside and about after 5 minutes he was acting perfectly fine. It looks very concerning...
