Hi Beth,
Purple sheen can be a sign of improper nutrition. And improper raising of the chicks. It's an interesting subject with more to it than that. Much written on the Net about it. An interesting study. Poultry breeders are very opinionated about it and the positive value of the green...
That's real interesting Fentress! I found this article on a Land Trust that preserved his farm. Pages 5 and 6.

Who was A.W. Newcomer of Glen Rock, PA ? Apparently he had poultry. This shop has gotten ahold of a bunch of his letters from circa 1916 thru 1919.

What breeds of poultry did he have?
Here is list of the breeds he...
wow, wow wow, I agree completely! The Speckled Sussex need nice birds like these in the shows so folk can see how they should be properly bred! Don't mention the weight or stress it. Just go and have fun...and let us know how it goes!
Best Success,
Karen
been there, done that multiple times with Golden Salmon Marans (except for the eating thang). Sorry to hear this. Hope your next line serves you well!
Onward and upward,
Karen ( now in Light Sussex)
Joseph, How did that cross go? You can send me chicks from that cross in a couple of seasons? Is that what you meant? I know you were working from Sussex to Dorking in your culling, however, did you see a blending of that wonderful Dorking body in the Sussex chicks in the 1st and second...
Karen, did you see post 746? I think he did respond to your idea but I don't think he quoted your post when he did it.

post 746:
Karen, I did a White Dorking-Light Sussex cross about a decade ago. It works. It would take you two to three seasons to stabilize. In a couple of seasons, I...
Hints? Hints? I love hints! Come on Joseph, strain-cross? color-cross? concentrating on one virtue? How about a small hint? Then we can wear ourselves out playing the guessing game, smile.
I have often wondered what a real nice Light Sussex x White Dorking cross would look like on my end, not yours.
Hi Joseph,
So glad you decided to stay with the Dorkings! Looking forward to reading about your new project later. I took a break from my Light Sussex too this year. Busy at work, a lot of things going on. We have one chick hatched by a hen. Look like a cockerel. Last year I admit to being...
After the wing issues of the 2013 season, ( 1st several pages of this thread) I removed the cock involved and didn't breed the hen again. She is in the egg flock.
We raised 42 chicks last season. Not a single wing issue in any of them. Some were strain-cross using a son of the...
Hi,
I found this true with my Light Sussex. I watched mine over 2 year and found a difference in chick down color which will allow me to cull for proper hackle color before the feathers start to come in. This is going to save me wads of money not having to grow out wrong hackled chicks...
Hi,
If you are selling "started birds" only, how old is that? I don't want to sell chicks or eggs.
But last season I think I kept them too long, selling at 4 months. I fed a lot of birds I didn't keep
and it was really costly. What is the earliest age I should be able to see all the features...

Hi,
Looking for a experienced poultry judge in western PA who knows the Sussex breed.
I am seeking someone to come over to my place and evaluate my flock. Any ideas?
Best,
