I'm going to take a good look at her legs tomorrow, and hopefully get some pictures. I don't know if it's the mites or not...in all of the pictures that I've seen, they still look like legs, just with wacky scales. Hers look like she was standing in wet cement.
For future reference though...
I should have taken a picture today, but it didn't dawn on me until right now. My Japanese Banty has been limping for a couple of weeks. My husband told me about it when he first noticed, but my pregnant brain forgot within seconds...anyway, I noticed the limp today. She seems perfectly...
Insert embarrassed face here...
We were given our Japanese hen as a gift, and she came with a bag of mash (?), so I haven't had to worry about buying her food. The bag is almost empty, so I'm heading over to the feed store today to buy something. I know what she can have for treats, but I...
Can you please pm me? Weird request, I know! I'm wondering if this person is on BYC...if you are, you live in my DH's grandparents' old house, and I was checkin' out your chicken coop a couple of hours ago (in the dark, from my car). I want to know what's up with your chickens sleeping on top...

Good to know! I thought that I needed one nest box for each hen.

I'll have to be the one to go look for the hardware cloth the next time. Really, DH didn't know what he was looking for. He asked, and was told that if it was not in a certain section (where he looked), that...
DH and I are really trying to make something out of nothing here, lol. He's doing all of the building; I'm just the one bringing him all of the information from the internet, and demanding that he build me a coop! We have NO building/design/carpentry experience, so this is quite an adventure...
Sorry for asking ten thousand questions today! I still feel soooo lost with all of this.
My coop is on the ground; do I need to have an official floor, or can it just be the earth?
We decided not to use it. We were trying to rig it for nesting boxes, inside of a coop DH made out of shipping pallets, but it's a few inches too wide. No biggie, really; we were just trying to be creative!
We're planning on using an old wooden electronic cabinet as a small coop. It's 3.5'x2'x1.5x. Where do we put the roost, and where do we put the boxes? This is for 3 bantams and a Japanese.
I know that I've read this like twenty times here, but I can't seem to remember what I read. How much room do I need in the coop for each chicken? It's warm here most of the year, only gets below freezing a couple of nights in Dec/Jan, and we don't get tons of rain. We do get hot winds in the...
thanks for all of the input. i think i have it all figure out now...i think, lol. pat, the link in your siggy was very helpful!
we're inland, so no beach weather here. it's dry and hot for a good part of the year, and the santa anas are generally hot winds as well. they're the great winds...
...find the extra time to do all of this. my husband works three jobs, so his availability to build is very limited. i wish that we could buy something already made, but that's out of the question for us. we are supposed to bring home three more birds by next week, so we need something now! *sigh*

Wow, like getting a dog de-barked? Interesting. I'm nowhere near ready to handle the extra responsibility that comes with all of that right now though. In the future, I'd like to hatch my own, but as of right now, we're just trying to get it together enough to have a decent place for...
