Sorry I haven't checked in in months... a broken and torn shoulder last spring followed by surgery has meant typing has been off the agenda for a while.
Thought I'd check in and see how everyone's rhodebar breeding programs are going and post a few pics from my most recent hatch.
Hope everyone's...
This is the reason we like to see pics. The pullet on that pic is missing several rhodebar traits... eyeliner breing the most obvious one.
We are not trying to discredit anyone, simply help in identifying those rhodebar which are displaying all the traits they should vs all those that are...
Without newly hatched pics you really have nothing. I strongly encourage you to document.
As far as grey, probably on the pullets, it's the same reason many are getting black feathering on the cockerel's breasts - one or both Co genes are missing. Not all rhodebar have those problem. You can...
If they are unimproved genetics you should be able to get eggs for $35/doz. Improved genetics (which take a minimum of 4 generations of outcrossing, backcrossing, and heavy culling) to quality standard bred RIR could possibly go for $75 IF the quality is high, the parents are proven, and you...
That's great! Ask the show chairman if you can have a meet. That way we'll have documentation for another show. We'll get you a draft of the standard before Oct so you can provide it to the judges.
First step is to make sure they are easily autosexable (not always as easy as you'd think).
Then once they feather out, make sure the feathering is correct...
If that's correct, then begin working on type, etc.
So you've got step 1 down. ;-)
This was something already discussed with the Standards Committee. The RIR club if America has not had a standard change in more than 100 years and has no desire to do this. However, the Rhodebar Standard being developed is based on the RIR standard. The first official Rhodebar meet will be...
No, not quite that straight forward, but that's a good simplified version. Your comb is not linked to other genes, so using Buckeyes for improvement won't get you the type you want, but it's doable. My RIR I am using have rose combs. I like the RC because I have no frostbite issues.
your...
I couldn't have hundreds of head of livestock out here in the middle of nowhere with our heavy predation without all of my Italian Maremma. Awesome lgds - I could not run this place without them. We are lambing right now and the coyote know it. But no worries here since the maremma guard...
But, keep in mind that the purebred rhodebar hens are only single barred and cocks are always double barred. So cocks will always be lighter due to the double barring. F1 cocks are only single barred. They are not purebred but a stepping stone generation produced for the purpose of breed...
Just a quick note... not a criticism but I wouldn't want folks misled. The cock pictured in this post does not appear to be a purebred Rhodebar top me. It could just be the pic, but he appears to be missing a Columbian gene.
Remember the RB standard we are working on developing here in the...
Your best bet is to get on a breeders list for eggs or day olds. My RIR eggs are all spoken for through the spring but some other breeders may have some available.
Unrelated but... I'm curious... What is the makeup of the barred rock. co+/co+, eWh/eWh, B/B ??? Just a random guess. I really have no idea. Are both sexes double barred?
