Something to consider when I am checking to see which hen layed which eggs is that different breeds lay different colored/sized eggs. So, this helps to narrow it down a bit, but isn't guaranteed of course.
But, if they are all the same breed then it can be a lot harder.
My chickens usually stop laying around November-ish and start laying again in early February. Feb. 6th is the exact day when I got my first egg after the long winter "egg laying dormancy" last year. By mid February they were ALL laying eggs again.
I don't use lights on them. I have layer...
wow, I wasn't the only one that thought their coloring was not typical of what I would expect for legbar chicks. Thank you guys for your responses.
Here is a photo of the 7 eggs they came from. They are a beautiful blue/aqua. The other eggs are easter egger eggs that I put there for color...
Day old legbar chicks, not sure what they are. I thought it was supposed to be easy to tell them apart. One is dark colored with a head spot & the other has a very small head spot but a little bit of markings on the eyes, but no stripe along the body. Neither is as light as I thought the...
Hi, I was wondering what the dark brown with white spot on the head ended up being (male or female)? I have one that hatched out tonight that looks just like that. It's a darker brown with a white spot on the head. I am not sure what the sex is. thank you.
yes, I notice the same thing as you with my chickens throughout the years. I prefer to incubate eggs dec-march (if I can) so that I get some eggs that same year hopefully, otherwise I will just wait until late summer & they mature thoughout fall & winter to be fresh & ready to lay come spring..
Hi,
Have you found a "blue" egg layer yet? I am in the same boat as you, and I understand you totally!! I have been looking for a true blue (without any green tinge to the egg at all) for a while now. I used to have a black rumpless araucana that laid very blue eggs and she passed away, so...
yes, I think this one has a lot of copper too, and I bought the eggs from a bcm breeder that was selling wade jeane/bev davis lines. The eggs were a dark brown I'd say about 6 or 7 on the chart, which is pretty nicely colored, but this cick doesn't look like other bcm's. I am going to keep it...
yeah, that makes sense, with how much copper there is there. There is a LOT of copper there, but I wasn't sure if more or less copper will help indicate anything. thanks!
haha! yeah, I'm stumped on this one too. I have seen bcm cockerels that have the same size comb or larger at 4 wks old! So, if it is a cockerel then it is "behind" in growing it's comb (as far as how it should look according to it's age compared to other cockerels). But, this one isn't very...
I know that bcm's can sometimes be tricky (up until the day they either crow or lay an egg). This one is 11 wks. old & doesn't have that big of a comb for it's age & it's not very red in color either (which is typical of a bcm cockerel at this age), so not sure if it's a cockerel with a small...
I think it's a shame that we have to feel like we are pressured to give people eggs (bribe/tax) to our neighbors if we want to have hens. I am trying to feed my family here with our eggs. It's not my responsibility to share my food with the neighbors. I don't ever recall a time when they have...
it is looking more and more like an andalusian. it was darker when it was younger, but does keep looking lighter & more charcoal-bluish as it gets older. I have a blue andalusian pullet right now but I didn't see the resemblance in this chick to her when she was younger. Here is a pic. of...
