I think the second laying season is a bit of over kill but I do think smaller eggs produce smaller chicks that may not compete well with the larger chicks thus producing smaller birds. Competition is pretty much everything in the life of a chicken....

Most or my Red Dorkings are now third generation, but a few are second. The rooster shown is third and from my hatching this season. I purchased eggs from a friend that purchased the chicks from Sandhill and the eggs were from her first laying season with the birds. That said I wonder if the...

My rooster in the picture is just under 7 lbs but he is also 7 months old and I feel he will fill out and make weight before a year. Though he is the only rooster in with these hens so he is not in a conditioning pen. I need to weigh the one rooster I have kept from last year as I know he is a...

Thank you Kyzmette and BlackPanther! My roo in the picture, which is actually a cockerel of course, is filling out really nice. The pictures make him look thinner than he is but he will get much bigger than he is now anyway as these birds develop really slow. I was worried about his tail...

I want to share some pictures of our Red Dorkings. Most of these girls are from this season's hatching and we are having really good luck with our size and weight in these birds. These are from Sandhill Lines. We only saved 2 roosters this season and I am really pleased with this one...

Leave out the yogurt and just get her to eat the boiled egg yolk crumbled with her crumbles. She may need a little sulmet to get her past the pasty butt which is a sign of a bacterial issue.

If you do not have anything else try crumbling up a boiled egg yolk into her food with a fork. There are many things in an egg yolk that a chick needs and I have saved many of chicks with this method. Does she have a pasty bottom? That would indicate a bacterial issue and you could even use...

I need to post some pictures of my Reds from this season's hatching. Where does the time go? These are my second generation and I am pretty pleased with what we got. I will get them on here eventually....

Karen, this may be a dumb question but how do you put the wording on your picture? And they are really clear-- very nice camera!

I have the brooder full of Red Dorking chicks right now straight from the flock pen. I have not paid much attention to the pullets but see some really good feet already on some little cockerels. I so wish I had a breeding pen set up so I could move some of my better birds and see who is...

I am seeing a mixed bag with my reds here in egg color and size. A few lay a very white eggs and maybe at some point I will try to focus on that. The bigger girls could be laying the larger size eggs but I am hoping more with age I might get bigger eggs. From raising game chickens I found my...

My eggs run small to medium from my Red Girls and are white to light cream. They seem to start out small and improve in size after a week or so. Hoping the next laying cycle they will be a little bigger. I have hatched some chicks already from my pullets largest eggs and they are producing a...

I was banding a few of my new Red Dorking chicks today that I am pretty sure are little cockerels and one got upset with me and bit me! And held on! Wonder what that says for attitude or temperament?
