Coons, dogs, skunks.... it does not matter what kind of a predator once they figure out there is an easy meal, they will come back. I learned that the hard way 6 weeks ago.
I ordered 18 and didn't get any "packing peanuts" do figure. But you can tell Ideal if you don't want any extras, if you let them know they won't include any.
Pip's chicks :
..........but I do feel bad killing a dog that is just being a dog when I feel it is the owners responsibility!
I felt the same way, until they took out my whole flock. And then they came back for the three that got away the first time. These dogs will be back!

They are 7 days old in that pic. It's fun to watch when they are outside, they go nuts trying out their little wings and god help any grasshopper that makes it in there
I free ranged mine for 18 month before I had a problem, but it was a big one! Stray dogs came in and waited for my electric coop door to open. Took out my whole flock
I am still convinced that I did the right thing by letting them free range on my fenced two acres. But I would be lying if I...
We were a family of 5 when I started out, I just wanted enough eggs for the five of us, well I fell in love with chickens (who would have thought? lol) and wound up with 17 hens and two roosters. No problem taking care of them I found it was actually "stress relief therapy".
So three weeks after two stray dogs took out my whole flock I got new babies yesterday. I ordered from Ideal and I plan on ordering some more in January or February. I hate to have to start all over again but I have to admit the little ones are cute. I went to a breeder and bought three French...
Both look like boys to me, sorry.
But like the previous poster said, buying from hatchery does not mean you'll get all pullets. in my last 12 I got from the hatchery, I had two males
and congratulations on your first Leghorn egg.
Lot's of people don't like leghorns but I love mine. They lay every day and sometimes I am wondering how a big egg like that can come out of a little bird like that
So don't worry the eggs will get bigger.
I freerange my chickens all day long, my coop is a "sleeping and laying" coop. It seems to work for me. I have an automatice door opener on the coop that opens at 6:30am and closes around 9:30 pm. Everybody gets out at 6:30 and spends the day freeranging. Sometimes I have a problem with them...
Going today to get some hardware cloth, I have 12 little chicks in the barn that I am raising for a friend, I don't want anything to happen to them. It was just amazing to see how that snake was able to get through the chickenwire. I guess it's the truth, chicken wire will keep chickens in but...
Just leave her alone she will take care of everything. I have a broody sitting right now, all I do for her is make sure that she has water and food. My last two broodies hatched all their eggs and raised their chicks just fine. I love the fact that I do not have to worry about the other chickens...
