Wow, I haven't been on in a while! Hope everyone and their chickens are doing well.
Got to visit my new Identical twin Nephews last week!
Came home a week later and all the chickens were accounted for...DH decided against having that roast chicken every night.
One however was/is broody. I do...
Hi neighbor! I live in Newark and work in Macedon. I saw that my friend Jim at Natureberry farm has black cayugas in right now.
Wow, and I was getting worked up this am at a networking meeting - the realtor was going over school town and county taxes.
Very pretty! I'm afraid I have the same...
Not sure if Macedon is a doable drive for you. Natureberry farm has chicks of various ages right about now so you can get some the same age as your remaining two.
Sorry about the fox attack, last year I had a bad year with fox while I was trying to rebuild my flock. Took 8 in one day.
Well something spooked the girls yesterday. The babies were hiding and mom was making a racket halfway across the yard, everyone else was under cover. I'm thinking hawk just because I've heard them around and the hens were keeping an eye on the sky. Everyone was accounted for thankfully...
I shouldn't have been so broad in my statement about the south. There are parts that are nice, we have family in VA and TN, they all do wel and seem to like it. But they are also in the city or suburbs.
The south just is not for me.
OMG, They are still all about the war down there....I lived in North Carolina for a year while DH was stationed at Camp Lejeune, never again will I live in the south. Thats a "special" kind of breed down there, and not in the good way.
I love the info! I was a bio major in undergrad but most of...
We were out at 6 am. Most of them were around fallen rotting logs. I remember as a kid finding some under logs as well. These guys were just hanging out in plain sight.
Oooh you'll get some nice intense blue eggs!
Do you know what kind of moth it is? This is the first time I've seen this kind.
We saw 4 of those salamanders...Red F's DH called them. It might be their breeding season...it might be the time to look
I hope he finds some!
Sorry to hear about the losses, hope you catch it! What kind of Ameraucanas did you hatch?!
Very pretty! I'm glad you got them for a reasonable price! I've always admired the Bielefelders from Greenfire Farms...too rich for my blood.
I love this one! Very cool!
Not much on the chicken...
LOL, yes I did. I lost 8 hens last year to one. DH wasn't very happy with me when I told him that. I heard there was a bear wandering around Greece last week. We had one wander through a few years ago...got me thinking that my coop could not stand up to a hungry bear.
I personally used the eggs...
It sounds like he's choking...but seems normal. I hope that was blue kote on his head and comb otherwise I would assume that a blue comb like that would mean he's having trouble breathing.
I wonder how long you can leave that on for without having skin or feather issues around it.
On another...
Ooooh, I may need some marans from you next time I get a broody!
An olive egger rooster can throw more olive eggers depending on what he is bred with...there was a really good chart on the olive egger thread and of course when I look for it I can't find it. lol. I know the more crosses back...
Haha, in New York! I'm hoping that blue one is a hen. Really I'm hoping I have a nice trio so I can breed them. I need to add some darker layers for olive eggs. My barnies don't lay that dark of an egg.
Aw darn, thanks for the quick responses! Guess I'll just have to hatch more!
Ditto on the extended black? Is that just a term to describe how the chicks feather out, linked to something, or undesirable for breeding purposes?
WARNING: Lots of baby chick pictures!!!
Today was their first day out of the coop. Mama stood up to the other hens to protect them, it was good to see.
Thank you to our service men and women.
I don't like to say "happy" memorial day, to many have died or sacrificed a lot for us to say it...
Hi, I had a question about splash Am's. Do they start out with black down?
These guys were hatched out of BBS Am eggs, the breeder said they started with Paul Smith lines.
One definitely looks blue, one is all black, but the second black one has white feathers coming in on its wings.
Could I...
Well after a roller coaster of a weekend, Ollie hatched out 4 babies out of 14 eggs. One drowned in a water dish (totally my fault for leaving it in there )
I water candled the remaining eggs at 23 days and had no movement so I cracked them open to see what happened. Out of the 14 only 7 started...
