NY chicken lover!!!!

I have a question for all of you with broody experience ....

I know the others sneak in and lay in her box - that's fine - I marked the eggs I'm giving her a chance on .... but I don't want to disturb her .... so I took out the extra eggs this morning while she was running around sucking up food for the day .... that means some snuck in in the late afternoon and the eggs were under her all night ..... are they safe to sell ???

I know I can eat them .... I am not squimish - but ironically - I don't eat many eggs ..... but I don't want to sell an egg with a chance at a tiny knot of cells and gross them out.

One night ??? I am perfectly ready to feed the eggs back to them, but don't want to loose sales if things are ok ....

I did check often - but didn't lift her up - only checked when she hopped off to get a refuel.
While I don't have a rooster I have had eggs sit all weekend when I was camping (21 total) and they were collected 3 days later. They were fine. I have no idea for hatching eggs but would thing 24 hours would be fine?

I pick my broodies up and check for eggs daily. Just once a day, but they seem to tolerate it quite well. (I have to wear gloves to pick up one of them, but the others don't even peck at me, just look like "why?" and sit next to the nest box until I put them back in) So if you pick them up once and collect when they are running around you should be ok. You could crack one that you suspect has been there for 24 hours and see what it looks like. Then let us know. LOL Cuz inquireing minds want to know.

(I also tell my customers to tell me if they find something inside an egg they won't eat and I will replace the egg....ya know, just in case)

Wow. You have Mille Fleur Cochins to? I thought me and Pyxis were the only ones here with them. I've got 2 dozen eggs hatching next week from my Milles.

Just blurb, I've seen Mille Fleur Leghorns too. On the rarebreeds auction site. I might have bid on them but Leghorns aren't my thing.

Metalla--the eggs should be fine to sell. One night isnt going to make a difference.

Melbu--bears generally are after the feed, not the chickens if they come around. I am betting they are getting the garbage in the area and wont bother with your chickens since they are already getting an easy meal. Ive had several boars and sows with cubs come through our yard (once when the chickens were freeranging) and they just looked and kept going. People often ask me if I am afraid of bears and that they might get my chickens. I tell them that I have taken the time to understand what motivates a bear, what I need to do to live with bears in the area. Educate yourself about bears and you wont have so much to fear about them because you will know what to do to not encourage them to stay around. Just my two cents worth.

Thanks for the offer of wheeling me around the fair but I dont think my leg could take a 3 hour drive right now! lol Im just glad I can finally bend it this morning. Gotta get out and check feed and water. It will be my stretch for the day. Might try to get my plants in depending on how I feel. Little bits, little bits. Going to be a nice day today so I dont want to waste it inside all day.

Have a good day everyone!

Morning all. Took a nasty spill yesterday before work then worked till 930 last night and my knee isnt sure what it wants to do. Thank goodness I had a trainee last night as he ended up doing almost everything as I had to keep sitting down. Doing my best to stay off it today and see if it gets better. I was able to hobble out this morning (slowly) and let the cheeps out. The new feeder and waterer in the brats/monsters coop is working out great. Found an egg in the run in Legolas coop this morning that wasnt there last night. Looks like one that Eowyn had been sitting on as she is down to 4 now. I wonder if she kicked it out yesterday while I was gone and it got knocked out into the run. I tossed it. My other broody silkies are sitting on 5 eggs each. Hopefully they all hatch.

Rancher--I know this whole thing with DW has you stressed to the max. Its always the "what ifs" that drive us crazy. Take your ques from DW. Before you make any decisions about your birds, you should talk it over with your wife. They may be an important part of her life that is helping her to deal with what she is going through even if she isnt directly involved with them on a daily basis. It is also obvious to me that even though you complain about how hard it is to keep up with them, they are a great stress buster for you. It may cause dw more stress to know that you have given up your birds because of her. Just my two cents worth having been down this road already, though not to the extent your dw has.

Off to get the knee checked out. Enjoy the day!

First off, ice that knee. Trust me I know knees. Stay off it and don't walk on uneven ground.

You of course are right about the chickens, though DW said the mean roo has to go and she is right and I do have someone who will take him and pay for two hens.

Of course the only thing that will do is reduce the eggs I get. Ahh, they're broody anyways so not laying.

I'm afraid it won't reduce the number of chickens since, the two broody's in the back room have hatched out 5 more chicks. Four Del and one EE.

The Dels are from shipped eggs.

I hope the hens take good care of them.

Honestly it's no wonder we can win. I sell/give away 1 and 2 more hatch.

Plus, I lost 2 chicks and 5 hatch. Which is good IMO. You know what they say, "the rich get richer and the poor get chickens".

I reckon I'd go out of my mind, (well if I hadn't already) without something to keep my mind off the situation. Course Lord knows there is always plenty to do around here. Lots of half done projects.

I've been taking the English Garden Magazines I have and leaving them in the offices. At least this way I don't feel bad about throwing them out.

Soon I'll be down to the chicken magazines.

Oh...here is the latest on my coop

It still needs to get painted and a roof but they are mostly done with it. They sent me pictures today. It is supposed to be 8x6 on the outside but its not tall enough to stand up in (which that may be a pain in the Ar$$ later but we shall see.)

Wow! Someone is talented for sure. Is that where you're going to leave it? In any case it's very nice. One thing I don't begrudge anyone here is the opportunity to show off their stuff. I wish there was a emoticon that was a pat on the back. Cuz I'd give you one. "pat, pat".

lol you tried to hit him on purpose? We saw on in our field behind the house this winter but have not seen him since.
fl.gif
hopefully wont see him either. There are a news article that said they saw a bear two streets over from me this week.....not sure how a bear would react to chickens
LOL, yes I did. I lost 8 hens last year to one. DH wasn't very happy with me when I told him that. I heard there was a bear wandering around Greece last week. We had one wander through a few years ago...got me thinking that my coop could not stand up to a hungry bear.

I personally used the eggs I found under my broody initially, but found that 12 hours really didn't show any development. You're probably ok selling them.
