While I don't have a rooster I have had eggs sit all weekend when I was camping (21 total) and they were collected 3 days later. They were fine. I have no idea for hatching eggs but would thing 24 hours would be fine?I have a question for all of you with broody experience ....
I know the others sneak in and lay in her box - that's fine - I marked the eggs I'm giving her a chance on .... but I don't want to disturb her .... so I took out the extra eggs this morning while she was running around sucking up food for the day .... that means some snuck in in the late afternoon and the eggs were under her all night ..... are they safe to sell ???
I know I can eat them .... I am not squimish - but ironically - I don't eat many eggs ..... but I don't want to sell an egg with a chance at a tiny knot of cells and gross them out.
One night ??? I am perfectly ready to feed the eggs back to them, but don't want to loose sales if things are ok ....
I did check often - but didn't lift her up - only checked when she hopped off to get a refuel.

Wow. You have Mille Fleur Cochins to? I thought me and Pyxis were the only ones here with them. I've got 2 dozen eggs hatching next week from my Milles.![]()
Morning all. Took a nasty spill yesterday before work then worked till 930 last night and my knee isnt sure what it wants to do. Thank goodness I had a trainee last night as he ended up doing almost everything as I had to keep sitting down. Doing my best to stay off it today and see if it gets better. I was able to hobble out this morning (slowly) and let the cheeps out. The new feeder and waterer in the brats/monsters coop is working out great. Found an egg in the run in Legolas coop this morning that wasnt there last night. Looks like one that Eowyn had been sitting on as she is down to 4 now. I wonder if she kicked it out yesterday while I was gone and it got knocked out into the run. I tossed it. My other broody silkies are sitting on 5 eggs each. Hopefully they all hatch.
Rancher--I know this whole thing with DW has you stressed to the max. Its always the "what ifs" that drive us crazy. Take your ques from DW. Before you make any decisions about your birds, you should talk it over with your wife. They may be an important part of her life that is helping her to deal with what she is going through even if she isnt directly involved with them on a daily basis. It is also obvious to me that even though you complain about how hard it is to keep up with them, they are a great stress buster for you. It may cause dw more stress to know that you have given up your birds because of her. Just my two cents worth having been down this road already, though not to the extent your dw has.
Off to get the knee checked out. Enjoy the day!
LOL, yes I did. I lost 8 hens last year to one. DH wasn't very happy with me when I told him that. I heard there was a bear wandering around Greece last week. We had one wander through a few years ago...got me thinking that my coop could not stand up to a hungry bear.lol you tried to hit him on purpose? We saw on in our field behind the house this winter but have not seen him since.hopefully wont see him either. There are a news article that said they saw a bear two streets over from me this week.....not sure how a bear would react to chickens![]()
I personally used the eggs I found under my broody initially, but found that 12 hours really didn't show any development. You're probably ok selling them.I have a question for all of you with broody experience ....
