This makes my blood boil. We have someone on our road that shot and killed the most beautiful, sweet golden retriever. She was a wanderer but did not hurt other animals. Her companion dog, another gorgeous springer spaniel, was also shot. He survived, but had over 200 buck shot pellets in him. I am annoyed at the owner for letting them wander, but I'm really disgusted at anyone who would shoot dogs that were out for a joy run around, happy-go-lucky and loving everyone they met.

Another neighbor's cat had tons of buckshot in it -- only found after the owner couldn't figure out why her young cat was walking stiffly like an elderly animal would. The vet said the buckshot was accumulated over time. What a sicko.

I'm very sorry about your sister's dog, kimmerjo, and hope she can find it safe and alive.

To be sure it's upsetting but folks wouldn't let their kids go wandering (well some will) and quite frankly I think animals should be given the same consideration. We just don't know what nutters are out there. It's just not safe anymore.

On average, how long does the broody behavior last? Just wondering, as it's a pain....haha!

Some hens will sit through more than one hatching if you take the chicks before she breaks. It's not healthy but they will do it.

You can remove her each time you catch her sitting and remove any eggs. They're females and can be pretty stubborn.

I personally tried moving a hen once to another coop and she got sick and died. I now leave them to do what they gotta do. She will break with one chick if you don't want a lot and remove any unhatched eggs. I guess I'm too soft hearted.

But actually - I took them a basket of goodies months earlier - those nuts were still fighting a war I was never in !!!

And I had liked the place a little - too hot - but the flowers were spectacular in the spring !

OMG, They are still all about the war down there....I lived in North Carolina for a year while DH was stationed at Camp Lejeune, never again will I live in the south. Thats a "special" kind of breed down there, and not in the good way.

Maybe you know already, but in case you don't, this is a male Io moth -- they're so cool! I see them once in a while at my cottage in Canada. Nice shot!


Another terrific photo! This is a Red-spotted Newt. How cool. This is a youngster, kind of a teenager, and can take up to 3 yrs. to mature and will then return to water to live. Meanwhile, they like living in the woods / moist leaf litter.

You saw some neat stuff. Love the pics and thx for sharing them with us. I'm a nature nerd, so I dig this stuff!

I love the info! I was a bio major in undergrad but most of what we looked at were algae, amoebas and other small things I can't remember (those penguins fell off the ice burg when the grad school penguins jumped on).
What is the difference between the adolescent and the mature adult?

I agree with you all that it is my sisters responsibility to look after her pets... Dogs do get loose. I just wish this man would have picked up the phone and called the animal control officer we pay for and had him take care of it. It was the man's neighbor... (a veterinarian) who called animal control to let them know he was shooting at a dog. She ( the vet) said the dog was doing nothing but running threw the field barking! the man will not let us check his property to find him hopefully alive.

Sorry to hear about that, you should definitely call a dec officer, tell them your story. They might be able to talk your neighbor into letting you look for the dog

Safer weed killer

This actually works!!

I am def going to try this after I get home from vacation. I hate weed wacking & if I can get this to work I will be so HAPPY On another note. The cardboard & newspaper I put down between veggie plants is working great!! I put mulch on,top of it to hold it down. NO WEEDS Found a really bright flashlight at TSC today. Going to try candling eggs tonight and pull the clear ones and mark the def growing ones so my friend who is chicken sitting can toss eggs if they don't hatch. @Sally8 21 days will be Sunday. That's from the day I put them under Lucy. I figured if by the following Wednesday there are eggs that still didn't hatch Paul should,toss them. Does,that,sound reasonable to you? If I go by the dates you pulled them Friday would be 21 for some and Sunday for the last ones pulled. (I did tell him to put them in a bag and tie it before tossing in the outside trash lol)

While I agree with the fact that pet owners need to be responsible for keeping their dogs in their own yards, there's something to be said for a little bit of civility and it doesn't sound like this neighbor has a lick of it. Refusing to let them search for their injured dog on his property? Come on!

Around here, wandering dogs are a frequent occurrence. Most of the mennonites don't really care much if their dogs wander, or if your dog wanders on their property. Truthfully, our own dogs sometimes wander, as we do not tie them up and we have far too much land to fence them in. Neither do we have the money to install an invisible fence. For the most part, they stay within our boundaries, but it does occasionally happen. I would be devastated if somebody shot my pooch because he happened to wander that day. :-(

There is one dog around here...he's a major pain in the rear in the winter, when we're not outside. He wanders through, poops where he pleases and upsets our dogs. But I would never consider SHOOTING him. That's terrible!

Honestly, I don't even like the whole shooting of the foxes and the raccoons, other varmin, etc.

regarding your newt question, the adults are brownish-green. They may still have some of those cool spots, but they live in the water (rain pools, etc.) instead of on land like the young ones do. The belly is usually yellow and speckled. You were lucky to have seen such a cool little newt!


Thanks to everyone who responded to my "broody question." I am going to just try to gently but firmly remove her from the box each day. Once I do this, she seems to go about her day. She is eating and drinking and keeping her weight so far. I already have one weak link in the chain (my picked-on Brabanter) and I don't want any fragile chicks. Especially during our crazy-busy summer schedule.

I hope she breaks the broody things soon, but at least I have my heads up that it could be a long time. Ugh... Thanks again.

Well TOB I used the wifes cam to get a pick of the bald eagles nest. At maxed out 28x zoom it wasn't as close as I wanted but you can tell they are bald eagles.



Also I forgot to mention I got a new fish for my fish tank memorial day weekend. Sadly it ate all my other fish except my sucker fish who is bigger than it. Here is a pic.

Your new, little fish, is going to grow into a big largemouth bass. Yikes!

That guy sounds like a complete screwball and a nasty human being, and I use that term loosely. How horrible he must be.
